Peavey IPR-3000 experience/opinions?

I know this is an old thread but after a number of years with an original IPR-3000 and a few more with the updated IPR2-3000DSP, I thought I'd add something to the knowledge bass. First, know that after running the original silver IPR3k it eventually ran into a couple problems. One was fixed with the help of @BbbyBld, then eventually it ran into an issue where running it with an unbalanced line let to some extreme noise via fan motor. Bobby was really cool to help me trouble shoot and spent some time and even offered to have Peavey look at it, but in the end I decided to move it to (balanced) monitor amp duty and move on to the IPR2-3K.DSP.

I've been running that now for a few years...bridged mostly driven by my Jule Monique or Kern IP-777. Until recently, it performed without a hitch. The clipping protection when needed did it's thing successfully and fairly gracefully. It remained clean and loud. Lately though it's started what's probably a slow slide. I've noted a bit of high pitched noise similar to the initial problem I had with my first IPR (capacitor 'sliding' out of spec. I believe)...Recently I've noted that I've had to roll those attenuators up a bit more than I used to for similar stage volume too. In the past 6 months It's also become prone if I hit it with a little more signal than normal... to shutting down and re-starting, which can be a bit of a drag on the gig. I've taken to running it dual mono instead of bridged and this has been less of a problem. It's easier to trigger with deep content (duh, more headroom needed) but I run my HPF3 in front of it as well as running the HPF in the DSP.

I still like the amp, but sort of in the realm of limited lifetime expectancy given a fairly heavy gigging and transportation schedule. I'm also probably shortening it's days by running bridged consistently across a few years worth of gigs. This one's probably getting towards the end of it's days I'm guessing.

You are an electronic engineer? Perhaps you might want to go back to school and (re)learn the benefits of the newer technology (and why it does not need "more material" rather than just saying they need more material without saying WHY?

Specifically study up on the operation of transistors as non-linear switches, high frequency magnetics, and reactive power sourcing/sinking. You might develop a better appreciation for what is happening.

If you are going to state something as fact, you better be prepared to defend a factually incorrect position. It's the way the grown up world works, right?

...I can assure you it's the way the grown-up world I live in works...military aviators, rocket scientists and weapon system engineers tend to see wrong answers as resulting in unacceptable fatalities on the home team...

I just posted a thread asking about the IPR2 3K. I'm interested in getting one. Won't be a full on regular use but depending on how I like it it may go in my main rig in place of my PLX3002. Thanks @BurningSkies for your reviews. I guess I'm asking (it'll be driving either 2x4ohm loads or 1x8ohm depending in which cab setup I use). If with limited use (once or twice a month) under modest volume if it would last and if it would be worth my cash to buy one.

Why are you wanting to replace the PLX-3002?

IMO, the PLX series almost can't be beat for the combination of power, performance AND reliability. Since you already own one of the "gold standards", what do you hope to gain?

I do love my PLX, it's kick@** and keeps on ticking. I was just curious. Asking questions wondering about the new technology. The PCB layout is amazing and being an old school electronics tech, very intriguing. Little teeny heat sinks on a high power audio amp... very cool, love technology.

I like the IPR2 amps better than the original run. They're just a bit better built and designed. I've had really wonderful experiences with Peavey and with Bobby's help along the way.

The good news is that since I posted on the 25th of July we've had another 20 shows and the Peavey hasn't given up. I've generally been running it unbridged these days any of the clipping behavior and shutdowns have stopped being a problem.
