Okay, this is documenting my upgrade of a Cirrus preamp with a Millennium preamp. This is an Option if you buy a Cirrus. I've gotten a Peavey G-Bass. It also has a Cirrus preamp, but since it only has a single pickup, there is an EXTRA Knob, the Pickup Blend. From what I've seen, it looks like I just have to remove it, and I'm golden! Other than that caveat, the upgrade would be the same for a G-Bass or a Cirrus.

Here is the preamp as it arrived:

M_P_N_Front.jpg

The Midrange control has to be sepperated, and rotated 90 Deg. The board is perferated, and it separates cleanly and easily.

M_P_Sep.jpg

Here is the Mid-Control in place:

M_P_N_F3.jpg

It needs a screw to hold it in place. It was NOT included. But not to dispare! I used a mounting screw from an electrical outlet! It's a bit long, but it works fine!

Just to get an idea of how this was going to look, I sat the NEW Preamp on top of the controls...:D What's with the 5th knob though?

MP_On_Top.jpg

Okay, so the millennium preamp is Preped! Now to get the Old Cirrus preamp out! First we need to get the knobs off...

G_B_KnobsOn.jpg

There is a set-screw in each of these knobs. 1/4 turn and off they came! (Love those Sparkles!)

G_B_KnobsOff.jpg

There is a 7/16" nut holding each of the controls in place. I used a 3/8" drive socket without a ratchet, and they came off easily.

Next, I needed to get into the cavity, and remove the old Cirrus preamp. There are 4 Phillips head screws.

GC_Closed.jpg

Remove those, and there you are! The Mighty Cirrus Preamp! (Destined for the TRASH!)

GC_Opened.jpg

I carefully lifted the old preamp out, so that I could identify (and DOCUMENT!) what wires I had to deal with, and where they attached to the preamp.

G_P_Cavity.jpg

Here is the front of the Cirrus preamp. I can see the 6 mounting points for the pickup blend control (Either side of GR-03). It is just vacant. This leads me to believe that all I have to do is REMOVE the pickup blend control from the Millennium preamp, and I'm in business!

G_P_Top.jpg

There are 3 groups of wires going to the preamp. From left to right, the batteries(Skinny Red & Black wires), the pickups(Gray sheathing and a red wire), and the output jack(Black sheathing).

3_Grps_ofWires.jpg

Here's the battery connections, skinny red & black single wires. They are marked + & - on the board. They are the ONLY things that are marked! This is the Front of the preamp.

Batteries.jpg

Here's the pickups connections. 3 wires total. The Black & White wires are together in a gray sheathing, and the Red wire is alone. This is the Back of the preamp.

Pups.jpg

The output jack connects very closely to the battery connection on the front of the preamp. Inside the black sheathing is a Red & 2 Black wires.

Jack_n_Batteries.jpg

If you are upgrading a single pickup bass, such as the G-Bass, you must remove the Pickup Blend control. (Unless you want to drill a hole, I suppose...) If you're upgrading a 2 Pickup Bass, such as a Cirrus, or a Gv, then SKIP this Step. (Unless you like 50/50 blend, and don't mind an empty hole on your bass) Getting this off was kinda tricky. there are 3 soldered points on each side. I ended up with the board in my hand, thumb on the control shaft, and Pinky on the board, applying some resistance, and moving from one of the three soldered points to the next. It slowly started moving, and then pulled out. I turned the board around for the other 3 points, and it was out cleanly.

M_P_Blend_Off.jpg

Next step was to swap the wires. I decided to do one group at a time, instead of removing everything, and then HOPE I get everything right. (A good project manager always breaks Big Projects into smaller projects!:smug:) I started with the pickup wires on the rear of the preamp. I used an old string envelope to protect the bass, and to write notes on. These wires came out very easy. I applied a slight pull on each wire as I applied heat from the soldering iron on the other side. Very simple technique.

C_P_Pup_Notes.jpg

Here is the Millennium preamp with the pickup wires attached. The new preamp has Clean holes to solder in. I put each wire into it's place, and bent the end of the wire to keep it in place. I added a bit of flux, and carefully soldered each wire into place.

M_P_Pups.jpg

Next I turned the preamps over. I made notes of the wiring locations on another string envelope.

C_P_Front.jpg

I decided to do the battery connections. I removed them from the Cirrus preamp, and transfered them to the Millennium, as I did with the previous connections.

BS_whoops.jpg

Last, we have the output jack wires to replace. Remove & replace as we have been doing.

Output_Swapped.jpg

Hold On here! The Red wire from the Batteries is supposed to connect to the black resistor. It is in the wrong location! Red wire should be in the hole to the left...

BS_whoops.jpg

Easy fix though!

Battery_Fixed.jpg

Okay, the electronics are swapped! And this control cavity is a great candidate for copper shielding! But that is beyond the scope of this project...(A good project manager avoids Scope Creep!)

Cavity.jpg

That's it for today. Make sure you clean up, and dispose of all un-needed items. Like the Cirrus preamp!

Disposed.jpg

I still need to mount the preamp, which will require reaming the Mid-Controller hole a bit. I will also need a Larger mounting nut, also Not Included, and a set of knobs, to accommodate the stacked controls of the sweepable mids. I think I'll call Peavey tomorrow, and see what they have in Black for the Millenium.

:hyper:More to follow!:hyper:

Very cool project, nice pictures. If you want to get rid of the blend control I'll buy it from you,I've got a Millenium board that has a bad blend control and I've already put a new board from Peavey in it.The old board I have works but the blend doesn't go all the way towards the neck pickup.

Excellent documentation. I've done the job several times and it really is an easy swap. The sweepable mid opens up much in the way of tonal possibilities.

I have found this little sucker to be invaluable for desoldering:

$10.99 at the Rat Shack.

Awesome! I had to Improvise! I used braided copper from a piece of coax cable...I'm getting one of these tomorrow!

For now the Stock preamp is back in the G-Bass. After having it in & out 5 times, it is truly defective. The volume just isn't there. Steve@Peavey told me to send it back, and he'll send me another, along with the Brushed black knobs! It is a pretty easy upgrade. And the TONE that comes with this swap is amazing!

I just did this preamp swap today on my G-V bass.

The millenium preamp flat IMO sounds almost the same the the Cirrus pre.

But the sweep mid control gives it a new life...:hyper:

The only problem is that I ordered the knobs with the preamp and they don't fit...:eyebrow: I'll give a call tomorrow to see what hapened...

I just put my Millennium preamp in my cirrus as well and the knobs also do not fit. Did you rectify your problem? and if so how did you do it. I am calling Peavey today.

Did anyone else have this problem and how did you fix it.

When you say they don't fit, how do you mean? Is the shaft lot long enough, or are they Knobs incorrect for the shaft, or ???

Do you have pictures?

I have sent my Defective board back to Peavey, but they are claiming they have not received it yet. So, IF I have to order a 2nd one with Knobs, I'd like to know what the issues are ahead of time.

Also, for you G-Bass users out there, Adding TI Flats is as big of an improvement as the Pre-Amp upgrade! This string make this bass come ALIVE! Yeah, Flats! I know...

I'm currently awaiting delivery of a PV G and I was wondering if the problem you had with the new preamp was resolved.

BTW, nice thread, very clear and informative.

Well I completed the swap over the past few days. It really is a straight forward install .

I will say (for those inexperienced as I) use a smaller solder and lower wattage iron for this project. I smoked one of the lands within minutes of starting the project. I was able to solder direct to the trace so no harm done.

Secondly I didn't see it mentioned but ran into a strange grounding issue in the mid control. When I touched the knob it hummed. I finally got confirmation from a Peavey engineer that you have to solder a ground wire to the casing of the mid control and attach it somewhere in the ground loop.

This preamp REALLY opened things up. The highs sound much more usable to me. While some of the mid points are very extreme to my ears ...this bass simply smokes now. I think I may be purchasing another pre to put in a project bass. Can't go wrong for $55...

Dredging up the past here... but I'm contemplating doing this upgrade to my Cirrus. After reading this whole thread it seems like there are some questions to still be answered.

- Is there an "official" part you can order for the screw you need to hold the mid pot?

- Where does this screw go to hold the mid pot? It looks like there's a hole in the corner of the mid pot PCB. Does the screw go vertically (when bass is in the playing position) through that hole and into the guitar body itself? Is there a pre-drilled hole for it to screw into?

- Picture of the ground wire soldered in place from the mid pot housing to the ground loop? And is that necessary on this install on all guitars (i.e. Cirrus) or only on a G-bass install?

- Is there an "official" part you can order for the retaining nut for the mid pot?

- What is the final answer on people reporting that the knobs they got with the pre not fitting? Did Peavey just send the wrong parts?

Thanks for any help!

I called Peavey, and they didn't have one. They obviously use SOMETHING when they install it, but it's not readily available to the public.

If you look at pictures 2 & 4 you can see the bracket that the screw goes into, and the hole on the piece you break off. The screw goes through the hole, and into the bracket on the PCB.

Sorry, I don't have this bass any more, and I didn't add the picture. Not sure on the answer, but I'd GUESS any use of this preamp would require the ground from the Mid Pot.

- Is there an "official" part you can order for the retaining nut for the mid pot?

Not sure. Peavey is pretty easy to contact, and work with. But on items like this I don;t find them to be able to help much. A trip to the Hardware store is usually easier.

- What is the final answer on people reporting that the knobs they got with the pre not fitting? Did Peavey just send the wrong parts?

Knobs do not come with the preamp. They have to be ordered separately. I'm not sure what the outcome was for the others, but I just ordered the Stacked set, and made due with the Stock knobs on the other controls. The Shaft could've been a little longer, abut I did make it work.

Thanks for any help!

No Problemo!
