Peavey T-40 Club Part 2

Love the distinctive grain. Here is my T-40 pictured here with my T-40 ash baseball bat.

Beautiful T40's. I've wondered myself why some of the 80's blade T-40's have that wider, stronger grain. It's something I've noticed before and my assumption is different wood supply and possibly a different angle of cut of the wood. Earlier T40 body pieces seem to be cut fairly perpendicularly and resulting in thinner lines. However, it's almost like the pieces for later T-40's are cut diagonally across the grain to get more exposed. Comparing DangNewt Blade model and Lug's Toaster model T-40's gives some indication of this.

Could also be a darker grain filler.

All this just being speculation. Anyone with any real wood expertise care to share any thoughts?

I’m guessing the grain thing’s simply just the luck of the draw. You’re right though, most of the ones I’ve seen are less tiger stripey & more straight up n down grain wise!

while I’m here, quick question for the experts- I’ve searched to no avail but can someone tell me if the T-40 frets are nickel or steel?? I’m planning on slapping some Hi-beams on mine and just wanna know beforehand.

Another question- did the whole thread deep dive but wanted to get some more current opinions.. (I mean what is Talkbass other than the same questions asked & answered over & over lol)

My T-40 came strung with a well worn in set of Pro-Steels, and he included a fresh unopened set of the same in the case. However, I have a set of Hi-Beams handy- part of me wants to try out the new set of Pro-Steels to compare but man. Hi-Beams are my among my current favorite strings. What’s everyone’s go-to strings for their T-40s?

Pro-Steels are what I use.

On mine I'm playing GHS Bass Boomers - M3045s (45-105).

Sweet. Yeah this is actually the first time I’ve ever knowingly played on a set of Pro-Steels & I’m kinda bummed on how dead they are, haha. I didn’t ask my friend how long they’ve been strung up but I guess I should just dive in & put on the new set. Been digging the dead rounds tone though (all of my other basses are sporting new stainless Rotos)

I actually have high beams on my T-40 at the moment. Definitely bright and zingy which is nice to me

Awesome. Yeah I love DRs in general, in fact Hi-Beams are among my favorites.. I’m gonna give these Pro-Steels a whirl first, mostly because they’re the same set as what’s on the bass already & I haven’t ordered a truss rod tool yet. But yeah, will definitely give Hi-Beams a go probably sooner than later.
