I don't think anyone knows, because no one knows which of the solid color bodies are alder, and which are poplar. Alder was only used on a few of the first solid color bodies before they switched to poplar.
Honestly, I doubt that they are much lighter. IIRC, the difference between Alder and Poplar is not generally much, though I could be wrong.
Also, I haven't noticed much difference in weight between my poplar bodied 80 and ash bodied 79.
the difference between my '79 black and my '80 natural is maybe a pound, probably less. Both still heavy. I really need to sit down and weigh them both so i can give exact figures. For the record, mine is one of the few that could possibly be made out of Alder or Poplar (according to Eilif) because it was built in 1979 when they were using both. Any later than that and supposedly they're all poplar. But yeah, it's still heavy.
A good way to narrow the posibilities down might be to contact peavey and find out two things.
1) Did they made solid color instruments in 1978? If they did, then your 79 probably is poplar. If they didn't, then there's a chance that yours might be alder.
2) how early is your serial #? If it's an early #, and solid color's were not around in 78, then it's extremely likely that yours is alder.
Im picking up a '77 Fender P next month and Im keeping my Peavey T40 too ^_^ You can have both you know.

The bridge pickup soloed on this thing is the only thing thats kept me from getting a stingray. (that and an empty wallet!!) Love it. I beleive its a '79

Im picking up a '77 Fender P next month and Im keeping my Peavey T40 too ^_^ You can have both you know.
Yeah, I'm fairly sure I'll keep it.....but like I said....the tone is great....but the weight is preventing me from playing it live.

Ive seen that very T40 on eBay listed several times in a row a few months ago. I remember thinking the only one who would be interested in it would be a fan of that band. ^_^ Glad to see it went to a good home. ^_^
Here are some pics of my recently acquired T-40. I bought it to replace the '79 that I bought new and kept for nearly 20 year before foolishly selling it.
This one's a '78 and it came with the original style rectangular case.
