Oh yea. From what I remember of the paddle switches on the '79 T40 I had (my '85 has the round switches instead of the paddle) that is dead on except its black instead of chrome (but I swear there were chrome ones up a month or so ago when I was getting the on/on switch for my Dynabass). Keep an eye out on eBay as people part out T40s from time to time there. Also the keywords I used was on/on/on switch and thats what gave me the listings for the toggle switch you need.

Hey guys. guess ill join the club. I just picked up my first bass and it just happened to be the T40! Traded a phone I found for it. So basically it was free.
Its heavy, but not nearly as heavy as i thought it was gonna be. I havent really played it yet. Still have to get an amp and a stand. lol I like the way the neck feels in my hand. I think im gonna have alot of fun learning on this bad boy. Beats learning on a cheap ibanez that ill out grow in a year or two.
Heres a pic i snapped really quick.....
The sn is - 01013877. By looking at it, im assuming its one of the mid 80's models.

great..I couldn't figure out how to order anything ont eh site or how expensive it would be, but it's nice to know that are available

another question for you all... what do you use to adjust your trussrod? It looks like a hex socket, but I couldn't get any socket I have on there..

is there a special tool?

WOW the woodgrain pattern on that one is very sweet. And it has the blade pups so it is in the 80s. There are ones here that know why more than I on the differences between the first ones and the later ones so they could tell you which year they switched the pups. Not bad at all for trading a cel phone ^_^

And yea, start playing it. You dont need the amp to start playing it. Tune it up (Im assuming you know how?) and start playing it!! And true, too being on here /can/ cut into your play time but what I do a lot is sit here in front of my laptop with one of my basses in my lap and play while Im on here....:bassist:

Definitely read around here and ask anything you need to know. Strings, tuning, how to adjust the truss rod anything!!

Thats the place I got the white truss rod cover for the T40 of FLKnifemakers I almost got.

cool! I just got back from my local guitar repair place..

they had a trussrod tool there they they use in the shop for leavey and gibson guitars, and then they showed me the kind that gibson ued to give away with their guitars..

so. I asked... "if that's an extra, will you sell it to me?" He said "sure,, how about $5?"

the truss rod is officially adjusted now.. I put new strings on it that were a little heavier, and it needed a good tweaking after that

Thanks. Since im new to all this im not sure what the best method of playing the bass would be. My dad had a small 10watt crate amp that he gave me. So im playing out of that for now. Ive already tuned it to standard E. I dl'ed guitar pro 5.2 off a bittorrent and got afew songs i like. So most of today ive just been playing to tabs. I think this will help me gain the feel of the bass, and help me with the frets and positions. Plus it should help me out in general. My hands/arms are tired from playing all day!
I went to guitar center today to get a cable and strap. While i was there i tried out afew of the basses that wouldve been in my price range if i hadnt gotten the t40. And i have to say this thing blows them out of the water. The tone is just sooo much better. Im still trying to play with the volumes/tones on it to get a deep tone that suitable for hard rock. So im very happy with this bass.
Im still using the strings that were on the bass. Any suggestions as to which ones i should get. Is there a difference sound wise in the kind/type i get?

Strings are a tough one and I am looking for the answer on this one myself. I just got a '79 and when I set it up I put on a set of GHS. Now normally I HATE GHS, but I gotta say that they are ok so far.

Normally I use D'Addarios 165s on all of my basses, but I heard that they are too short and the GHS is all I had otherwise. So... my luthier suggested DRs. I may got that way, but I really think that I will wind up getting the D'Addario super longs (or what ever they are called) as the next replacement set.

So... in short... GHS worked for me, but I would not recommend them (from previous experience even though this time happened to work out). I would go either DR Sunbeams or D'Addario 165 extra longs.

Im still experimenting with different brands of strings myself. When I played the first time it was just whatever I could afford. Still broke but I am doing what I can to find a string I like. So far I like Peavey roundwounds as well as Fender brand roundwounds. I used to play heavy gauge but am moving up to medium to light and they are working out really well. I have also heard that hybrid slinkies are great on T40s. I think those are Ernie Bell?

I can't do the Slinkies... carry over from guitar days... They are MUCH too loose/slack. My guitarist in my current band swears by them, but I HATE them. Obviously a matter of opinion. Dads are where its at IHMO.
