I can't do the Slinkies... carry over from guitar days... They are MUCH too loose/slack. My guitarist in my current band swears by them, but I HATE them. Obviously a matter of opinion. Dads are where its at IHMO.

Sounds like slinkies would work great for me since I tend to do 'lead guitar' stuff on my bass sometimes. I have yet to try them though.

Now I have tried dads and I am opposite to you; I do not like them. I paid a fair amount of scratch for a medium heavy gauge set of roundwounds for my Foundation5. The D string was defective or something, dunno, but it was the shortest string yet it had the longest to go to the machine head...needless to say it snapped. I have since gotten a replacement D string for it but not sure if its a dad or not but its the right gauge. I have played around with the bass even with that string gone and I really just don't like the feel of dads. Nothing against those that like 'em but they aren't for me I think for whatever reason.

I have regular ernie ball slinkys on my T-40 right now. I'm not quite sold on them. I will probally switch them pretty soon and buy something else. In my opinion they are to bright.

Another comment that makes me think Id like the slinkies. I light a 'bright' sound. Give me that bright new string sound but with deep undertones to it and thats the sound I try to go for every time.

Yea, ive heard alot about the ernie ball slinkies. Guy at GC tried to sell them to me when i was there. But i didnt just wanna jump on a pair without doing alittle research. Freakin bass strings cost like 4times what guitar strings do! lol

I'm using DR LoRider Nickels. Like the sound and can be heard through 2 loud guitars and a drummer.

I put daddario half rounds on mine when i first got it, and if you choose to make sure to get SUPER long-scale strings...I had to drastically throw off the intonation on my E string to get the taper to clear the nut with regular long scale (I thought it would be fine since my peavey millennium was string-through and they cleared, I underestimated the ferrule depth difference )

Onto the sound, I wanted them so i could try to get both a vintagey sound and some growl. They didn't live up to my expectations, but they were pretty mellow without losing as much highs as you would with flats. I put the fender stock rounds I took off my P-bass on it (roto flats + P = heaven) and I love the aggressive sounds i can get out of it. I've never been fond of half-rounds, but if you dont want to go full on flats i do find they get a very 'tame' tone out of the T-40, if thats what you're looking for.

I had DR SS Lo-Riders on mine, which worked great for gigs, but for a recording project I put Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats on (they're long enough), and found they were perfect in the studio. It always bothered me that bright strings wouldn't project as well on record, and now I wish I'd had this insight years ago.

For folks worried about string length, I've been using fender strings, and sometimes I have to burn (with a lighter) or razor off a bit of the nylon by the nut, but they've always been long enough.

i'm looking for a thick, deep, full sound, with some growl... not a thuddy sound like associated with flats.

I recomend and use Fender pure nickel. Deep, thick, round, without the thud of a flat. They might not have enough Highs and high-mids for you though.

Try some stainless steel strings. I use Rotosounds right now and they are growly. I can't remember which specific set they are but I would imagine most stainless steel strings are generally growly?
