Peavey T-40 prototype on Ebay

I have a feeling that it's the first production rather than the "prototype" but it certainly is a pretty great chance to acquire the first of the breed.

It's not strictly a prototype, but one of a *very* few pre-production samples that were sent to dealers. Finding one of these (especially in that condition) is like finding the Holy Grail if you're a T-40 collector.

So where do the 8M numbers fit in. I'm confused too

The 8M numbers were early '78 instruments, as were those with six-digit serial numbers, and both came with the same rectangular case with the copper-colored lining. I've got a six-digit and an 8M (both with OHSC), along with a six-digit T-60 w/OHSC. If I had the spare cash, I'd be ALL over this one.

Adjust the strings or neck! The G is not even on the fretboard. Why is this always missed??

It looks more to me like the bridge wasn't quite centered. If you look at how the bridge and the pups line up, the bridge looks like it was mounted a little too far over to the G side. Practically speaking though, I don't think it really matters because whoever buys this is probably going to put it in a display case rather than playing it.

That rings a bell, I think I remember hearing about these "0" samples on the old T-40 forum. Definitely quite a find and would definitely be a Holy Grail if not for...
That headstock is way north of the body too, looking at the side profile pics. Like a huge forward bow....
Didn't notice that at first. Very disappointing. Not something I'd be likely to buy right now, but I'd be extremely tempted if not for neck/bridge issues. As is, given the choice I'd much rather have my very nice condition '79 (all the same features) than a jacked neck dealer sample. My T-40 gets played!

And the starting bid isn't too far out of wack either.
Probably true, though with the neck issue I'd be surprised if it goes much past the starting bid. No watchers or bids yet, though it is still very early.

My guess is a neck alignment and truss rod tweek. The seller has some other musical items, but seems to be primarily a collectibles dealer. Who with any knowledge of neck geometry would not have done or have had done such a basic tune up ?

Are you being serious? $1,000 for a T-40 seems insane to me, even if it is rare or an oddball... I would swear this guy had to be a TBer because nowhere else on the planet sees the value in old Peaveys.

I will have to disagree my good friend because everywhere else besides the people on TB know the value of Peavey gear I stopped telling people I even hang out here because most of the bass players I know haven't even heard of this site. :)

It would have seemed odd to me too, except that recently I checked the "sold" listings in Ebay. T-40's in good condition are selling for $450-600. I think folks outside of TB have discovered T-40's. $1000 is alot, but as this is a rare sample example, double the cost doesn't seem totally out of line. Or at least it wouldn't be if the neck, bridge and strings were aligned.

Still weirds me out a bit though. My T-45 is in good shape and my T-40 is in even better condition and they cost me less than $300 each.
