Peavy grind help on mods

I finally found a 5 string I like. It wasn't expensive I like everything even the mojo from all the years it had been played.
Here's the catch I played it thru a little practice amp. When I purchased it. Now I get home and I'm not really impressed with it's sound as a passive bass. My mustang is louder than this thing.
Any advice on gettin some sound out of it? Pickups?
Preamp? Keep in mind I don't want another active bass, just some sound. Any advice would be so appreciated.

You COULD get an EMG onboard booster, or use a boost pedal, both go for around 30 euro here, but they're both active. Alternatively, you could get higher output pickups, but it'll cost you more.

Pickup height, perhaps?

I think a bass exciter or some other boost peddle might be a good idea. But it so quiet I think its wierd . Like I need a checkup at the bass dr. Pickup swap?

What are the pickup dimensions? That'll give you an idea of what pickups you could use as replacements. I've played a Grind a few times at GC and they seemed like nice basses, though I've always heard that the pickups were the weak point.

Thanks for the advice please anyone know replacement pickups. They are the medium size like a Bart ibanez pickup please let me know

I had a Grind for a while. Pretty cool bass IF you get the right one.

I had to replace the pots and not being the most motivated guy, I opted for a pre-wired passive harness from (this is NOT an ad) Best Bass Gear online. They also had EMG active pups that came with the entire harness per pup- vol and tone plus output jack.

The harness replaced what looked like the kid that had soldered it must've been new. The pickups in those things give you one tone. A somewhat subdued but ballsy tone.

Something has to be wrong. I have a Grind 4 and those humbucking pickups work great going through any amp I have....Peavey, Line6, G-K. I would definitely have a good tech check it out before making any decisions on boosters, pedals, replace p/u. You bought it used, right? Is it possible the previous owner swapped out the original p/u's?

Def two great suggestions I plan a trip to see a tech and the harness if its what's need like you said guy may have bitched a pickup swap. Thanks guys. So the mentioned harness and pickups are designed for the peavy grind?

Ya, there is definitely an issue there. I have a Grind 6 and its volume is right on par with any other passive bass I have...if not a bit louder.

Passive Harness - Best Bass Gear

Grinds are V-V-T-T. The pots they use are top notch, USA Nobles. I also picked up a VVT for a Fender Jazz I'm rehabbing. Don't get me wrong, I can solder enough to get by, but these are easy and I'm lazy.

I used to have a Grind 6 string. I put EMGs in it, and it really made a difference.

Went to local shop today. Had a check up it's fine now. Had no issues, they said I'm just used to hot pickups. I did get advised if I wanted some more valume possible Preamp . So I opted to purchase an audere Preamp . Testing after installed sounded great but opted to wait and shield the Preamp area. This will be sweet setup when I'm done

Audere makes some really nice stuff. It ought to scream when you get it back. Worth the wait and cost, no doubt.

Oh my that Preamp is awesome and I still haven't found all the tones I really would like. I wonder what it would sound like with some sweet pickups in it too?! I'm very pleased with this bass sounds like a 700 $ instrument to me now at a great price

Thanks for the update. Is it the Audere with Z mode? I'm waiting on a custom bass from a Luthier and it's slated to have an Audere.

It will probably sound deeper, and clearer with better pick ups. Congrats, nice bass!
