Pedal order ? Please

Try one pedal at a time, learn how that pedal works, then determine the order best for YOU. Experimentation is part of the fun!

I would try combining the BDDI and B3K together without the other pedals. See how they work together 1st before doing anything wild.

My biggest detriment to learning effect pedals was plugging everything together right away and just playing. I always expected an amazing sound and it never happenned until I understood what each pedal individually could do.

Ok, so I did read before I came here about pedal order and there were a few things that raised concerned. When I read about the drop pedal it said that it needs to go first to get the change of pitch to sound right.. but then when I read about the bddi it said it needs to go before anything… which this puzzled me because if the tuner goes after the bddi then I send the out to the foh then I’m gonna hear my bass when I tune… so that was puzzling I also now have delay and chorus cause I like tool and type o negative… so those are happening now. I actually don’t have the b3k yes I have the alpha omega uktra but I like the preamp of the sans amp better, also when I have both darkglass preamp and sans amp preamp plugged in they seem to sound less even if only one is on. but I also like the distortion of the darkglass so I wanted to just get the version of darkglass that was simply a distortion pedal and not a preamp pedal. So yea… right now I have chorus and delay in the effects loop and in the front bass/tuner/compression/bddi/drop….

Bass, Tuner, Drop. Start there. The tuner has the ability to mute everything after it - you want that! And yes, if you are using the BDDI for your live tone, you want the Tuner before it.

2nd part - I am glad you are reading the manuals, but part of the fun is experimenting. I would use the Chorus and Delay at the end of the chain. See what happens!

Try the Drop by itself and see how it sounds. It did not work well for me: added a warble to the tone and I could hear the delay of the pedal working. Not good!

so on the drop pedal… I only go so low… if I try to play the devil in i by slipknot with a bass tune in standard it is not happening. Also I don’t even attempt to play metal that is fast tempos with busy rhythms…. So I actually have drop tuned guitars and basses but I wanted the drop pedal for all the stuff in between super low tunings kisss queens of the Stone Age Motörhead Guns N’ Roses van halen… all the stuff in between drop c and e standard that I missed out on as a kid cause I always had drop b and drop c guitars…. It has been a blast

Also eq the bass in the daw made the drop sound better also

Really, the best advise is to experiment with the position of each pedal, there are no "right" or "wrong" ways, just what works for you.

If I were you, what would work for me is the following setup:

Bass -> Tuner -> Drop -> Compressor -> B3K -> SansAmp (routed to the FOH via DI or to an amp).

Since the Digitech Drop alters the sound of the bass once engaged, it's crucial to adjust the compressor accordingly to maintain a consistent tone.

That’s another thing I wanted to say on here last night when I was playing that eq in the daw and the compressor make that drop sound consisten for me… I do notice a little warbaly sounds but once I’m playing along with a song it is gone…thanks for all yalls help. Really am enjoying bass… my bass amp is not the greatest amp, but since I took the time to add the other speaker and then started adding the pedas it’s really started to become better and better… it’s just a peavey mini max… then I started with a 15, and eventually added the two tens… it’s crazy how far the sound of the amp has come… well also I didn’t know how to tweak the knobs at first. Didn’t add enough pre amp gain, but it’s really getting better and better…

The downside of using the compressor before distortion or overdrive is that these will be less reactive to the nuances of your playing (the compressor reduces the variations of your attack, which will make your dirt more even at every notes). If, like me, you like your drive sound to react differently when you dig in, I’d put the compressor at the end of the chain.

Still leave it on when distortion is on though right?

Yea dude I know have tried this dark glass pedal with a ltd bass with two pickups with the compression afterwards and I see that it doesn’t sound great with my p bass but it sounds kool with this other bass.. I tired of always switching pedals around though don’t know what to do

Maybe I should get a small pa so I could see how these outputs sound and decide which one I want… I eventually want to have a pedal board made so I don’t have pedals and cords everywhere in my living room but I just can’t decide… or maybe just get a different bass amp also and have two different effect chains through two different amps oh well I give up

Thank you for sharing with us. You are experiencing a lot of frustration and I truly wish I could pay you a visit and help sort everything out! If you live near Chicago, IL, send me a PM and let's see what we can do. For now, here are some ideas I had.

I think I advised you incorrectly on the tuner pedal. The Polytune Mini 3 does not seem to have a mute feature when you engage the footswitch. This is why you are having issues. I read the manual here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

A way to fix that is to purchase a separate mute switch or purchase a new Tuner that has a mute built-in. I use this one: Mute Switch Pedal Guitar and Bass | Sweetwater

You are having issues with the Hyper Luminal Compressor - take the compressor out of the chain.
The Darkglass B3K, take that out too. Just a suggestion. What did you want to achieve with this pedal?

Try the Tech 21 BDDI as your main preamp and do this: set the Level the same as your bypass (bass only) level, Blend at 9 o'clock, Treble at 11 o'clock, Bass at 11 o'clock, Presence completely counter clock-wise, Bass at 11 o'clock, and Drive at 9 o'clock. That should be a good starting point with some edge to your tone, plus it will have a lot of your bass's inherent tone still coming through. Let the BDDI be your source of compression for now - it already adds it in when you use it.

What tunings are trying to switch to in a live setting? Please list all of them. Are you playing a 4 string or 5? How is your guitarist tuning between songs? Drop pedal? Other guitars? Perhaps you can transpose some of these songs without needing the Drop pedal so often.

I do have another tuning pedal that is the big poly tune… however when I step on the polytune mini 3 It mutes my amp but not the output on my darkglass alpha omega ultra. I do not have a b3k yet I wanted to get that to be my bass distortion and just keep the sans amp as the preamp. I am not trying to go to low with the drop. Just really half step down and a whole step down.. ok so my bass I have two bass
1 Korea ltd with tw pickups
2 a p bass
The dark glass just does not sound good with that p bass I’m sorry.
But when I use the ltd the darkglass sounds neat.
My overall goal is to have a versatile bass rig that has a little bit of everything and my original plan for the drop pedal was to make it to where I didn’t have to have a lot of basses.
So the band thing… I really am not jamming with the guy anymore but he uses a digitech drop to and just only wanted to play a couple of songs that were a half step down or a whole step down… however I am always finding bands that need a bass player and they always have different tunings.
But what I just tried was hooking my pedals into my amp, then running the output of the di to the interface and the drop only changed the tuning of the signal to the front of the amp not the output of the di.
I tried it with the signal taken from the xlr in the back of my amp and the drip work on both signals. So I guess my particular setuo would need to be mic a cab. I guess my goal is to get everything working together and this pedal board finished and all the cords nice and neat to where if I go jam with someone I just plop my pedal board down and plug into the amp. Not always moving pedals from here to there to here to there whether I Wana play out of my amp a band session or my interface..
