Pedal Sequence

Hello all, I was hoping to get some help regarding the best sequence for my pedal board.

I'm about to get a proper board set up, and want to make sure I'm setting it up as best I can. I did run a search before posting as recommended, but a number of my pedals fit within the 'Gain/OD' section of people's recommendations for the best chain - so I was hoping for some specific advice.

At the moment my signal chain is as follows:

Boss TU-2 > Radial J48 DI (dry bass signal goes direct to FOH via XLR, THRU continues to FX) > EBS Octabass > Crowther Audio Hotcake > Crowther Audio Prunes & Custard > Wattson Classic Electronics Fuzz > Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI ---> to head (Trace Elliot AH1000-12).

Sidenote - I used to use the Sansamp as my post-FX DI send to FOH, but it has recently developed a buzz which means I now have to run my signal through another DI before it reaches the head (!). It sounds like a grounding issue, but everything else is quiet. Has anybody else experienced this/know how to fix it?

Everything is currently powered by daisy-chaining out of the TU-2. Not ideal, but my Dunlop DC Brick PSU is in need of repair.

Any thoughts will be much appreciated!

OK, firsties...points for searching!

And everyone has a different idea of what makes a good order, and most everyone will also tell you to rearrange pedals a bunch of times and go with what sounds good to you (which is good advise); all that said, what I'd do is move the octave past the dirt in general; I like to arrange my dirt from minimal (light OD) to maximum (your nastiest fuzz); I'd also probably put the P&C after the dirt but before the octave.

YMMV.

i was with Erukus until i tried my Dark Driving before fuzz. it pushes the PPB, TAFM and Stache into new, angrier places. both ways have them there merits.

for me (and Muddy Buddy is super right, there are no rules, ears win) i go OD, Fuzz, Filter, Octaver, Time-Based Weirdness, Preamp.

sounds like a crazy setup. ever think about getting a tech 21 RBI and just running your effects in the loop with the 50/50 switch on? It does the same concept your going for and that way you can make sure the sound guy at a gig will always have the same mix of the two signals. plus you won't have to worry about sending 2 signals to FOH

I'm honestly looking at getting a voodoo labs pedal control and pedal commander and rackmount my pedals just to cut down on cable length and make it easier to move and setup my rig.

Everyone seems to have put the Octaver later in the chain - but I've seen a lot of people expressing opinions that placing it directly behind the tuner allows for the best tracking of the signal. Is this true?

@ Nephilymbass .. I've thought about the RBI in the past, but to be honest I'm not in the position where I'm worrying about cutting down the number of channels I'm sending to FOH (I have a third - my cab is also mic'ed!). The Pre-FX Radial J48 was added to add back in some of the natural low end of my Precision which I dial out with the Sansamp. I also play with in-ear monitors live, and I like to have just the post-FX DI feed sent to my ears so that I get the cleanest reference of what my pedals are doing.

I'd love to get a voodoo labs or equivalent pedal board setup, but it's just ££££!

hurm. couple caveats........

01) didna read that link yet.

02) don't know who Bryan Beller is.

i'm a bit busy at work and i'm a tit about who is what and was responsible for this and that awesome thing.

but if he's making the argument that an octaver should go first for tracking purposes i guess that's technically true, but with the better octaver's i have about the same quality tracking before a fuzz or after. but the sound is WAY more interesting AFTER a fuzz. what an octaver does to a fuzz? AWESOME. what a fuzz does to an octaver? meh.

again, like Mudder Butter said, IME and for sure try it both ways if you can to see what you dig on.

Like everyone else says - it really is personal preference; There is no "Right" way to do this.

Dry DI is just the first of three sends to FOH.

Second is a post-FX DI, and third is from the mic'ed cabinet.

I really boost the presence on the Sansamp, and consequently some of the bottom end gets dialed out. The dry DI allows for the natural low end of my Precision to be balanced in with the wet signal at FOH.

I play in a band with a lot of sequenced sub bass frequencies. I need to have a more top-heavy bass tone to sit on top of that so as not to muddy the low end.
