You have perfect timing on this. BOSS just announced the GT-1B. Yes, it's $200. But you'll get a wide array of effects. If you only use it for tuning, compression, and maybe a bit of dirt and delay, you'll more than get your money's worth. Then there's everything else. Learn how to program it, and you may never need another pedal.

At least that's what I would do if I were starting with effects today.

For country yep a compressor. You might want to look at a nice tube DI pedal like the noble DI

If you want to integrate more pedals later the new Boss MS-3 is probably a better option then the GT-1B or the Zooms because it intergrates into pedal boards better. If you have a Class D amp i'd vote for a valve preamp like the Two Notes Le Bass as well, other then that as you play with the multi fx you can replace whatever you feel you use and isn't good enough.

I got the Zoom B3 which I thought was really great. Then I got the MS-60B for extreme portability. Once you get either one set up the way you want, they work nicely and sound just fine. However, you will need to spend some time tweaking them. Either would probably work OK for you.

The classic bass effects are chorus, fuzz, and synth/filters. A good one to start with is fuzz.

What better for a virgin than a big muff? She'll do you right.

Since you're a pedal virgin, my advice is to start with a small pedal, and then work your way up to some of the larger sizes once you get used to it.

Hey guys,

The title is a little deceiving as I do have a pedal tuner. My setup right now is: Bass->Tuner->Amp

I've been looking into pedals for a while now, but I don't know where to start. For reference I mostly play Country covers and prefer a fairly clean sound. Let me know your recommendations for me. I don't have a tonne of money to spend on gear so budget friendly options are a plus .

Another vote for the Zoom MS60b. Think of it like a Swiss Army knife. It does a lot of things and is small. Not as good as a specialized tool for each function, but they do the job well enough for casual users.

They have several very useful effects in them for a Country bass player--tuner, compressor, boost, eq (graphic and parametric), pre-amp and amp models (in case your amp goes down). You can use 4 effects at one time...in any order and more than one of the same, if you want. And they are inexpensive too. The one thing that you have to do to get most of the effects to sound good though--turn each individual effect level down to unity....they come set up way too hot.

You may want to look into an EQ pedal. A compressor pedal is pretty much a given.
Whatever you do, I would suggest looking at less expensive pedals first. That's not to say you should go cheap, you definitely don't want cheap pedals. Do some research and look at reliable mid-grade pedals.
I would actually suggest against picking up a multi-pedal (except for maybe the boss pedal suggested above) since you probably won't use many of the effects provided in a country band. If you want a clean tone you're probably just using pedals to spruce up your tone, not to dazzle the crowd. You'd be better off buying one good pedal for the same price that you won't outgrow in a hurry.
