If you're gonna stick with that board, you'll want a long cable to go from row 1 to row 2 eventually, IMO. You may as well bite the bullet and get one and if you hate everything about it you'll know.
My board does actually look more like your board #2, but its split up differently than your drawing. 2 across the bottom, 3 across the top, then 2 more across the bottom (wireless doesn't count as I never stomp on it). But I came to that after building my board to fit my needs and years of effects usage - including the long row-reset cable.
