I´d say Tuner, Drive, and Compressor as an all around standard. Speaking of a well rounded board to cover some styles: Tuner, Drive, Compresor, Wah/Autowah, Octave, Chorus, Reverb, afterwards is taste and money

But, now that it's come up I prefer my Hartke Bass Attack.
I replaced my Zoom B3 with another when my old one got destroyed in a flooded basement. I haven't used it but once since replacing it. Great multi effects and pretty all inclusive, but I think I'm going to go with just the bass attack and maybe a Bass Big Muff Pi deluxe eventually. Keep it simple and easy, Bye bye B3.

Nice did it come with a box? A really big one?
I've heard they come in handy when transporting gear back and forth from home to the studio.

The essentials bass pedals from my perspective are usually these pedals.
1. preamp
2. compressor
3. distortion(i.e overdrive, distortion, or fuzz)
4. modulation(chorus, flanger, phaser)
5. wahs
while these effects are usually the most common effects you would find on bassist's pedalboards, there are other effects that you can experiment on like a whammy, synth pedals(including a bit crusher
), reverb, delay, etc. and you can so much fun experimenting with these effects. so If you ask me, I say explore the world of effects. you just might come up with something unique to your bass sound. Also if you're looking to buy effects for your rig, that depends on what type of music you play. other than that, check out some of the essentials. if you play rock and metal and money is no issue, check out the darkglass stuff. they make awesome bass effects.

I keep maybe a compressor that I never use, other than that I have used a Tube screamer for distortion on bass...mainly though, for money's sake, and my own sanity I just use the POD HD500x because it has bass models in it, not that it matters since it's all digital.

Personally I use an octave a fuzz and an envelope filter.
I also have a preamp that doubles as a DI with a compressor and I can get a wide range of tones from those options.
But I play mostly funk style stuff so that works for me.
I think your pedal setup should be reflective of what and how you play like a super heavy distortion pedal might just gather dust if you play country, but might almost always be on if you play metal, think about what you want your sound to be then try a bunch of stuff out at your local shop and figure out what works for you personally it is the only way to really know what you're gonna like

The only pedal I use 100% of the time is a HPF from F-Deck. Allows me to tame the lows for any given room. I play multiple P-Basses, G&L L2000, and Lakland 55's and the extreme low end of the bass spectrum [140 HZ and down] can overwhelm the room. I find EQ on my GK MB500 does not compensate nearly as well as the HPF.
I agree with this. No compressor is better than crappy compressor. Another advice: don't overdo compressing...
