Pedals? HELP!!?

I've been playing bass for a while now, and i recently dropped out of one band (death hard metal core or summat like that) and into another band which does muse type stuff. This has led me to the conclusion that there is a lot more I can get out of my bass than loud noises that move walls and I've decided to invest in some pedals.

Can someone who knows about pedals please give me a rundown of which pedals do what and any other tips, like the difference between fuzz, overdrive and distortion because I'm pretty clueless atm. Thankyou :-)

The FAQ is the best place to start for a general understanding. And then if its Muse tones you are after, go here next: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/chris-wolstenholme-sticky-ver-1-a-619908/

Kaputsport has put a ton of time and money into copping most of the Muse tones. He has at least four videos showing how he is doing it as well. Definitely worthwhile watching. A lot of the pedals are easily accessible and not too expensive as well (outside of the Deep Impact and Animato). Best of luck.

I've been asked this question personally several times and it's good advice (I think) that floats around Talkbass as well. The best way to get into effects if you're not sure about what's what and what you need/like is to get a decent multi-fx. It will let you try out a bunch of different sounds and give you an understanding of what you like vs. what you don't.

Check out the Zoom B3. I'm fortunate to have two very nice pedalboards, but I recently picked one up for my birthday as an impulse purchase. I've been pretty impressed so far... Lots of usable sounds, a looper, DI, etc. and it also doubles as a recording interface. It would be a great way to get started in the effects playground, and it's a tremendous value for the money.

Just my $.02
