Consider this a public journal, a blog, a rant, or whatever... I feel like writing, and it's always (usually) great to get the thoughts and comments of the good peeps on talkbass.

I believe we attract the people we do in our lives for good reason. Lessons we need to be learning, experiences we're meant to have, things like that. It's a spiritual belief that I'm aware many don't agree with, but anyway...

Lately I've noticed my life is becoming flooded with people who don't know how to shut up, and I need to stop allowing these people in. I'm noticing 2 distinct types also, though I'm sure there's many more.

Type 1: I'm sitting in the work cafeteria with a friend or 2 having a nice, interesting conversation. Type 1 person shows up. "Can I join you?" Pregnant pause, we all look at each other, smile, then reluctantly say, "Sure." T1 person within 30 seconds picks up on something someone says, and then starts... "You know, I have an aunt who does that! My aunt Sally used to wash her car every single day. She would go out and buy that that Armorall stuff, and make sure sure every single last knob on her dashboard was spotless. She was soooo meticulous about everything. And her friend who lived across the street would do the same thing. It was like they were in competition with each other. That other woman was crazy though. She would wear these fishing hats that were her husbands, that looked like the ones Gilligan used to wear? Do you remember Gilligan's Island... oh wait, that wasn't really a fishing hat though, was it? Anyway... One time she, bla bla bla bla bla bla bla......" and on and on, and on, and on. Person goes on relentlessly, leaving no spaces for anyone to politely jump back in and redirect the conversation. The conversation has become theirs, and they talk relentlessly about people nobody knows, or cares the least bit about. People previously sitting there start scrolling through facebook on their phones, the talker doesn't even notice.. a couple of nods from the more polite of us keeps them going and going.

Type 2: Similar to type one, except they talk about things of interest. Only problem is, you can't get a word in edgewise, and when you do, they're not listening one single bit. They're thinking about what they still haven't gotten to say. And anything you say has to fit in a 30 second window because they're going to start going again right on top of you, if you don't get out what you're attempting. Which doesn't matter anyhow, because you're just talking to yourself.

I was trapped with such a person yesterday. They were doing me a favor though, so I was grateful and somewhat happily accepted it.

My rant is over. I think I have to grow some and start telling these people to just shut the ef up and try listening, or actually conversing once in a while. Don't know where they're coming from, but I can't help but to think I'm attracting them. And it's about to stop.

I bet their rambling is their version of your long rants. That's not a dig at all. I like long posts.

Similar thing that annoys me is when people don't let someone get 3 words into a sentence without interupting with "me too...". Then launch into their version.

My wife and her close friends do this to each other but none of them stop talking.

I considered that and was going to mention it... Big difference is, I'm not imposing on anyone. If my rant starts getting annoying to anyone they can simply turn the page, which I'm sure many do. When you're with someone it's like an attack though, that needs a counter attack if it's going to end. I don't like being put in that position. I think it's really disrespectful.

I came across something on a related subject, listening, and the commentator said that there are two types of people.
Type 1, people who listen to understand
Type 2, people who listen to respond

You've probably already noticed that both Type 1 and Type 2 talkers mentioned in the OP fit into the Type 2 listener category.

... and then there are the people who not only don't shut up but talk REALLY LOUD over everyone to compete.

I was once sitting beside one of theses peeps, they were making my ear ring and annoyed me to the point I couldn't stand it anymore, so I started talking over them, they got louder, I got louder. Suddenly the conversation stopped with everyone staring at us. I looked back at everyone like nothing was wrong, and the convo started up again.
I had to try really hard not to laugh during the silence.

Actually, the part that bugs me the most is that 30-second-or-less period during which they pretend to be listening, but it's obvious that they are merely waiting for you to say something that they can use as an excuse to jump in.

We had a drummer in our band who while on road trips would segue from one topic to another like the Kevin Spavey Kaiser Sozay_Usual Suspects character.

I always wanted to pull a Monty Python & holler; "SHUT YER GAB YA TWIT!"

He was hypersensitive, told his wife everything. RULE ONE FOR GUYS: Never, ever, tell your wife everything.

He lasted about 2-3 months.

As a classic introvert, I try to avoid being held hostage like that.

To me, they are energy vampires. The more they talk, the more energetic they get, the more tired I get. No thanks.

I have a list of excuses to ghost out.

I have an appointment to get my clevice worked on at the chirodoctorium often.

You can tell they aren't listening when they say, oh ok.

"My, I bet you monsters lead interesting lives. I said to my girlfriend just the other day - Gee, I'll bet monsters are interesting, I said. The places you must go and the places you must see, my stars! And I'll bet you meet a lot of interesting people, too. I'm always interested in meeting interesting people. Now let's dip our patties in the water!"
