Petite bass for girl player?

Hi everybody,

Which (full size) bass guitars would you recommend for a girl player? More specifically, I'm looking for a bass with a relatively slim neck (as my hands are small) and a light weight (I'm 110 lbs [50 kg], so I can't really hold a heavy instrument throughout a whole concert).


My current instrument is a Cort Action 4, but I'd like to upgrade to a bass of better quality (up to a price of around 2000$ or under).
I mostly play rock, funk-rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers-style) or jazzish things, so I'm looking for something that's tone would suit these genres.

Your best bet is probably some sort of Fender Jazz bass. You can get a pretty nice one for well under the amount you're willing to spend. You might also give Ibanez basses a try.

Ibanez Soundgear basses or Fender Jazz Basses. There are other lighter basses but I wouldn't call them funk rock basses like Hofner etc.

It sounds like a MusicMan Sterling (not to be confused with Sterling by Music Man) would be what you're looking for. It has a slim neck, a smaller body, and they weigh typically around 9lbs. Just to be clear this is what I'm referring to: Music Man Sterling. Either a single humber for humbucker/single coil model would do just fine.

Seconded on the Ibbys. They are really light. I really like the SR750 series as far as light weight/slim neck go.

We just upgraded my daughter's bass to an American Fender Jazz. It was very reasonably priced, and she loves the sound. She's about your size and has very small hands too. She loves it and loves the sound. I think it's a little heavy, but she thinks it's perfect

I'm female and personally I wouldn't recommend a Fender Jazz. The bodies are so big on those and if you're on the smaller side, it might be too big for you. Plus they tend to weigh quite a bit. Honestly I'd check out a Fender P bass Special. Jazz neck, smaller P bass body (which I've found seems to fit the female body better). I hesitate to recommend any Ibanez since most of the ones I've tried have been questionable quality.

If you can afford it, the Sadowsky Vintage and Will Lee series of basses are much smaller jazz type bodies and generally lighter weight. Plus they're awesome basses. My main bass is a Will Lee and it only weighs 7.5 lbs. You can get those in Metro versions, and they're just as awesome too. You'll never need another bass. They pop up used here in the classifieds pretty regularly in your price range.

Fender Jazz Basses are amazing. I have microscopic hands even though I am a man and greatly prefer Jazz necks to almost any other basses. I've heard great things about the MusicMan Sterling as well. Really either of those basses are good bets. If you are looking for a slimmer neck then the Jazz is what you want and if you want a lighter body then a Sterling is a pretty good bet.

I'd recommend that You look in to some of the Yamaha Basses. They are light, have slimmer necks and most have thinner or contoured bodies. They can also be found for a very good price which leaves moar money for amps, lessons or a back up bass/cases/strings/tuner/effects/whatever

+1 I started out on bass at 13 with an ERB070 and it is still the most comfortable bass I have played. Obviously you're looking for something of a higher calibre, so an RBX model Yamaha is still the same light body with superior wood and electronics. just my opinion.

I have an Ibanez BTB bass that's pretty lightweight, at least compared to anything I've ever played in the Fender family. The BTB necks are very thin front to back, but about average width side to side.

The only thing with the BTB series is that the scale is an inch longer than Fender scale (35 inches vs. 34). Which means the neck is longer and the space between the frets is greater and that really becomes noticeable up by the headstock. So for a smaller person with correspondingly shorter arms and fingers, that may not be the way to go.

$2000 (US?) is a real nice budget to work with so you shouldn't have to settle for anything less than perfect. Try out as many as you can and when you find the right one, you'll know it. Good luck!

Ibanez Soundgear series, Peavey Cirrus USA, Music Man Sterling, Schecter Riot neck-thru. Usually most anything high end based on the Fender Jazz.

My Millennium 5 string is lighter (8.61 lbs) than all of my 4 strings, and the body is pretty slim.
The neck is quite thin, and narrow for a 5, so I assume the neck on the 4s will be apprpriately smaller.

And they can be had relatively cheaply.

I would seriously suggest a Fender Mustang bass. They are short scale and smaller bodied. They are ideal for a smaller person with small hands. Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads used one. Get an old one if you can - serious mojo and light and small.

Perfect. A Jazz and other full scale basses will be too big. As you are from Budapest you should try used European sites. German sites would be good.

I'd go for an Ibanez SR500 probably. Even better, the SR500M (with maple board) as it's lighter still.

Fender Jazz basses, at least in my experience, are too heavy and huge.
