It seems that a lot of people on this forum are against petz rosin... I have used pops and found it to be really really sticky for solo use and petz actually improved the sound of my bow. I am using petz right now and wonder if I should change. I actually like petz, so I don't know why so many people are against it. It might be due to climate differences between the US and Taiwan (I live in Taiwan), but I don't know if this is true b/c I have not tried swedish rosins like nyman for example. I have a recording with my playing using petz rosin. You can download it here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298252 . Is it possible to drastically change my tone with another type of rosin and how will it change if i use _______ rosin brand? I don't want to mess up with my bow by trying lots of different rosins so I want to look for your advice. Thanks

Is Taiwan a humid place? I haven't tried Petz in a long time but it seemed very dry. It might work well in a humid environment. I could see it working for solo playing but I don't know if it would get enough grip for a good full orchestral sound. I am using oak rosin at the moment. Oak has a lot of grip. I'm using soft oak since the humidity is very low in Baltimore right now.

Trying lots of rosins doesnt mess up your bow.

For solo work I find that I like less sticky rosin, like Oak,
or Nyman or even Jade although I havent used that much.

In orchestra playing I've tended to use Kolstein soft lately.

Never tried Petz so I dont have an opinion either way.

I am pretty happy with what I've been using, Nyman's, but since rosin is relatively cheap and I have a lot of curiosity from reading about Kolstein Soft on Talkbass.com, I'm thinking about trying it. Where do you order it from? I've only ever used Pop's and Nyman's/Carlssohn's.

I am looking at getting the sampler pack from Quinn:

$39.54 Bass Rosin Sampler Pack. Includes one each of Kolstein, Pop's, Carlsson, Petz, Royal Oak.

I currently use Pop's, but figure if I am going to find out what I can use, and when (climate), I may as well try as much as I can.

+1 on pops being sticky

I actually use pops rosin right now and I agree that it is pretty sticky, though one time when I borrowed someone elses pops rosin in the US it worked fine :confused: it must be the climate, since it is really humid here in Taiwan.
