I do not normally get too flashy on the bass - but in one of the groups I play with, they sometimes call for me to do leads on the upright with the hillbilly percussive slap style. This was when it would cut out on me (when everyone in the room was staring at me:hiding:

A tube amp just won't do that.

Right, that is unacceptable. @Bass 45-were you using the compressor? Was it turning off, or "hard limiting" and just coming right back for the regular notes?

I use my PF500 w/the 610 for a funk/disco (Carwash!) band so I get to do my share of wanking. Last gig was with my MTD Kingston Artist 5 which is fairly hot and I am slamming all of the strings (including using the low B for some Pink tunes we play).

It just cracks me up that (and this includes me) we all use these ultra-portable amps now, but bring a backup in case they blow up.

Thundar, sorry I missed your question...was out to sea for a week with my band's yearly cruise. But Bmore told you what I would have said, except I do like the aesthetics of the Micro VR head a lot, and will use it sometimes just because I have it. But the PF350 is easier to tote around and has more wattage, so sometimes I mix the looks up.

I just folded on my PF500. I was tired of my head not working. This seems like it will do the trick for PF fans, but I will not be trusting it for a long time. Coming from a full time tour situation, the weaksauce PF500 was too risky from day one, and when mine finally gave out, I was in a real bind. I hope this head is reliable, because the tone and feature set of the Portaflex series is really cool. I just wish mine had worked.

I sold my PF-500 for a $100 loss. I bought it in April. It failed and went into warranty repair or replacement 3 times. This means, at least 3 times, I was SOL at some point during a gig. Not cool. I loved the way it sounded when it was working, I admit. I hope the PF-800 works.

I sold the PF-500 via consignment, at the same shop that did the warranty work, and right after the last repair. I didn't want to screw another bassist, but I couldn't't just throw it in the trash either.

March 1st - interesting Jheake.

I'm looking at the PF800 because I really like the Portaflex tone and form factor. I'm assuming, although maybe incorrectly, that the 800 will be voiced more like the 500, with the same front panel setup, and I like the step up in power - larger step from 350 to 800 vs. 350 to 500.
