Pharoah Sanders, giant of spirit-driven jazz, dies at 81


Pharoah Sanders, the revered and influential tenor saxophonist who explored and extended the boundaries of his instrument, notably alongside John Coltrane in the 1960s, died on Saturday morning in Los Angeles. His death was announced in a post on social media by the record label Luaka Bop, which had released his celebrated 2021 album Promises and confirmed by a publicist who worked on the release. Sanders was 81 years old.

Since I am also a saxophone player. this hits me hard. I've met him in Oakland (Yoshis) years ago and also in NYC. He likes carrot cake and he made me laugh . Monster player. Thembi and the creator has a master plan are my favorite Sander's albums

Karma is one of my all-time favorite albums. I am truly saddened by his passing.

I worked at an art store in The Bay Area in my 20’s. Pharoah Sanders came in one day and I sold him a couple of packs of FIMO clay.

...this one , man...we are all blessed to have existed in the same continuum as Pharoah.

Took the day and the news to go out in the boat today. Was inspired to go further than i have in the past, found a new island. Started off with The Creator Has A Master Plan, came back in the evening to Journey in Satchidananda. Everything in between. Just, everything he touched, as a bandleader or a contributor. ... Yeah. Onward, eh?
