^Phase issues

Hey! It's Jack Bruce. Clearly, things work out for him that don't work for most of the rest of us.
As Mr. Jim Croce once sang. "You don't tug on Superman's cape."
I'd tell it this way, the physical laws work out different for him when he was on stage.

More than Jacks' cabs on stage I'm very impressed by the sound of the two side by side drum kits. The drum kits are appart a couple of yards which means there is phase issue on stage. Furthermore it's impossible for two different drum players to hit a kickdrum or snare or hihat at just exactly the same time to avoid any kind of phase issues.
As any drum kit covers a wide frequency range it's impressing to hear no phase issues

I find that drummers quickly learn how to play together in time, they trade off on what parts to play. With micing and post editing, you can compensate for a host of sins.

There's a fantastic product called Melodyne (Invalid Link Removed) that can be used to correct a lot of issues. They are based in Germany (Invalid Link Removed). :)

I think you are right the drummers playing in the vid might be post edited with software like Melodyne.
Both drummers playing sounds extremely tight which I would not expect (by default) for live situation.

Here is more "natural" sounding example of two drummers playing just within the same song.
The "battle" starts at 2:45 and it can be easily listened that the strokes sometimes are not exactly at matching timing. But rather than audible "phase issues" the total sound adds to a pretty "livelike" sound charcteristic.

The math for adding of two incoherent acoustcal sources is written as

This means that for two identical violines side by side or two identical kick drums side by side the total pressure level adds with +3dB.

The fundamental of a kick drum can be assumed to be around 50Hz. One half cycle of 50Hz calculates to 1/100 second. Theoretically this "could" mean for two drummers playing two "matching" kick drums that every time the stroke would differ for smallish deviation of 1/100 second the total sound (might) completely cancel out. This also could theoretically mean that for exactly "matching" strokes the total sound would add as +6dB

In real world practice the total level always adds as +3dB independent of any delay between the two sources. This is because of the uncorrelated property of the two sources.

Multiple drums spaced over yards of distance never seemed to be a problem in the drum line when I was in the marching band.

Google for Seegusler which is a well known marching band at least in European countries. Besides traditinell stuff they also play popular songs from Metallica and way more different stuff. They don't suffer on any phase issues although there is lots of drumming instruments within the band.

I believe you.
Being in the band live would seem to allow for more "phase" differences than listening to a recording.
Unless the recording was done with just one mic worn by the fourth chair baritone horn.
