Phaser that has that funk

I have been looking around for a nice phaser for funk type music. I have been looking around for a roland jet phaser with no luck. I am now looking for a 6 stage phaser. I have heard of several great recommendations such as bad stone and mufx phaser 2 and moog. I am wondering what else is out there that might fit that category. Thanks in advance!

The boss Ph-2 has a very classic funky sound, but it's not the best for bass. It works but it definitely loses some low end, but they are super cheap used and have 2 modes which are 10 and 12 stages apparently.

I bet the PH-2 has been used on some classic bass lines, partly because there weren't as many alternatives decades ago but they do also have a great classic sound. Here is a thread on it: boss PH-2 super phaser

I agree it's best on guitar but it also works solid on bass, very simple but effective controls. I mainly use mode 1 as it's very smooth and funky but mode 2 is nice and distinct. I have the ph-2 and a MSLP phaser rigged up right now and I really love them both for different things, the MSLP is very loud and thick with a more modern phaser sound but hte ph-2 is incredibly smooth and funky and has such a classic tone. Probably because it's been used on tons of classic records

Phase 90 is 6-stage, no? I'm playing around with a Phase 99 these days and loving the dual sweep, but syncing the two together yields a Phase 90 sound with what sounds like a little sharper peak. Might work for you, but it's over twice as expensive as a used P90.

I have a Moog Cluster Flux. It's interesting but (so far) the flange and delay effects I can get out of it are more interesting than the phaser. I would MUCH prefer a Roland Jet Phaser after seeing that infamous Larry Graham vid! I remember reading that people have tried to recreate it but I'm not sure what those are called or how successful they were.

Oh BTW I have also recently been bitten by the Jet Phase bug! (to @Kragnorak as well) So far I have tried the Crystal Dagger (the ring mod side is basically a phaser at slow speeds) and Keeley Darkside as fuzz/phase combos, but they didn't quite hit the mark for me. Still plan to try the Keeley Monterey which has univibe and auto-wah LFO functions paired with its fuzz. Loud Button made the one you're likely thinking of, the Morphine Dream, which was a Jet Phase clone with lots more controls.

Phase 90 is 4 stage.

Phase 100 is a funky 6 stager that IMO works much better on bass than the 90 because it is less chewy and the sound "sticks" more to the bass tone. The 90 is sort of like you can hear the normal bass and a whoosh on top of it, but the sounds don't, IMO, mesh all that well.

So the OP should look for a 6 stager, and keep it analog. Phase 100 is one of the better ones, but like all phasers, you lose a lot of low end on some parts of the sweep. IMO phaser is best used when the bass is featured more prominently in a mix, or when the other instruments drop out and you are in the spotlight. Also, IMO, phasing works best with a dirty tone rather than clean.

The Pigtronix EP2 (successor to the original bass envelope phaser) is the chewiest phaser I've ever heard. I couldn't tell you how many stages it is but if you look up the comments and reviews it gets here on TB, you'll see that you really can't do much better.

Jetlyzer also labeled by ibanez...i have never seem one used with bass before. Im sure its very similar i would not be stocked ifnit was the exact same electronics just different packaging i think both are made in japan

Check out the EHX Bad Stone reissue. It’s my favorite 6-stage phaser. It’s also got a manual switch that’s also extra funky.

This thing is soOoo funky i dont know what could beat it everything else so far seems tame. The only problem i have is the price thats why i want to find somthing thats close enough kinda thing but i may end up wishing i just bit the bullet and purchased one of these lol

Anyone try out a mxr phase 100?

I've got an ancient one stored somewhere. Haven't used it for ages ( like since the 80's ) but if I can revive it I'll let you know what I think. I remember it being rather "creamy" or "Dairy Queen milkshake-esque". If that makes any sense.

I've not been using because I didn't like it but just going through a long period of using no effects.

I use one of the new MXR Script logo custom shop Phase 90, an Akai Intelliphase and just recently acquired a Roland AP-7 Jet Phase. The Phase 90 gets the classic Stranglehold tone with speed set between 11-12 O'clock position. The Akai is discontinued and can be used as a standard LFO phase shifter and has two touch modes. Not sure how many stages it has, but it gets a great analog tone. The Roland is a machine unto itself. Works best on bass with the Jet (fuzz) engaged. Be warned that it is a bipolar (+9/-9volt) unit and does not have connector(s) for external power, so two 9 volt batteries power it. I suppose one could come up with a bipolar power supply and connect via battery clips to the unit. It is one large three pound pedal though. I primarily use the MXR since it is small and gets the job done for me. The Akai is quite a bit larger and I only use the LFO mode, but has something about it that makes me keep it. I also own a Prophecy Sound Pi Phase which is a clone of the MuTron Bi Phase in a pedal format with all of the functionality of the original. It is an optical (LED/LDR) package like the original but way less costly than the MuTron. It is powered by 9vdc power supply, it has an internal charge pump for the bipolar power of the circuits. I am still trying different settings to find out what it is capable of. It is a different tone than your standard pedal phaser. All of them have there own flavor of funk to dish out. At present it is the 90 or Akai for me.

Actually the phase 100 is a 10 stager. I agree that it works well for bass. I love mine! I prefer to use mine clean after a filter when getting funky. With dirt I get too much flanger-like jet swoosh noise, but that can be useful too in the right context.

I also love the simplicity of switching between 4 basic phaser sounds and setting the speed. Very easy to find the sound you are looking for.

Mr Black GilaMondo alllllll the way, it's so rich and funky. I've used a bunch of phasers in my time (Boss PH2, PH3, Maxons, MXR, Pigtronix and many others) other than the GilaMondo, i have very very fond memories of the HBE Psylocibe and the Maxon Rotary Phaser.

You have a lot of options of good phasers in the market.
The SA Lunar is a great option that's super tweakable and versatile and you can check also the TC Electronic Helix in the same category.
The EQD Grand Orbiter and the Solidgold Fx Apolo Phaser are also good options analog options.
The Chasebliss Wombtone is one of the best things out there but a bit expensive option.
I really like the phaser sounds on my Line 6 M5, it's an affordable option and the sounds are really good.
You have the more classic options like the MXR phase 90 or the EHX Small Stone that are more affordable.
Xvive has a great phaser pedal that's the wave phaser that also seems to be a great pedal.
A friend of mine has bought the TC Electronic Blood Moon and it sounds great as well besides being quite affordable.
