Phil Jones Bass Owners' Club

The C8 is just 8 x5 , double the size of C4. The C4 cab = a 1x10 (C8= 2x10) in cone area but it is definitely louder than ANY 1x10 bass cab on the market by far.It is not just a question of volume but tonality. These are not just 5 inch speakers but very proprietary PJB design and no other bass amp maker can produce anything like these. That is why no other bass amp company is producing comparable 5 inch speaker cabs.

I always try to stress this. Phil has designed everything from the ground up to work together in beautiful harmony. He doesn't just throw a speaker in a cabinet and call it a day.

Case in point: I'm using the Double Four in a theatre gig setting. It's holding its own in a 37 piece orchestra, and the master is only at noon.

There is a musicality and sweetness that is in the PJB amps that you just can't beat. Plus, the cleanliness of the amps I find allows any effects you use to really shine.

Are you using the Double Four as the bass mains, or just a personal monitor? Is it on the floor under your chair, or up on a stand next to you?

I do a lot of freelancing and end up playing in odd places, like completely out doors with no actual stage and no PA support, or in a club with a lousy PA and a drummer with no volume control. Most of my regular work is with extremely sensitive players who play to the room and to each other, so I can get away with less. But sometimes I just have to crank it and be part of the problem.

In this situation, it's the main unit, on the floor in the vertical position. I'm playing my NS Design EUB, seated in a cello position, so the orientation of the amp works well. There is one microphone in front of the conductor to pick up the entire orchestra and pipe it into the auditorium. I was told twice already to turn down during tech week.

Another time I had the amp under my seat for a 50s motown review. That time they used the line out to the house, so it functioned more as a pit monitor than anything else, and still kicked butt.

I try to get away with either the Double Four or Briefcase on the bulk of my gigs, which works really well (especially when you're in the studio). If I need something louder, the D600/4B setup comes out.

Very cool. I'm definitely interested in the Double Four or Bass Cub as a secondary amp.

I used the Super Flightcase on 2 gigs last night. First up was my Shen SB200 with a roots/blues/jazz/americana band (4 pc, with guitar/banjo, keys, vox, drums, bass). The venue was pretty small and intimate, with about 20 people at any given time. My gain was set to about -5dB and the volume knob around 1/2 way up all night (my Full Circle has a VERY hot output - the gain any higher audibly clips). Plenty of capacity and EXCELLENT sound.

From there I went straight to a packed rock club with several hundred people and a HUGE sound system. The band was a 4pc rock/pop group with vox, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, and bass. I used my 6-string electric and the PJB mainly as a DI. Gain about +5dB, volume just about all the way up. Even cranked, I couldn't hear a thing from the PJB behind me, but mainly from the house system out front, with a tiny bit of wedge. The bass in the mains sounded *great*. However, it doesn't matter *too* much cause I was perfectly able to hear the bass from the house/wedges. Was also complimented on how incredible my bass sounded out front, which is what matters most. The PJB DI is excellent.

Granted, most of my gigs fall in between those extremes. And I usually don't deal with both extremes in the same evening, but it happens from time to time. Regardless, the PJB sounded absolutely fantastic, and right for the respective genres, in both situations. Still, I'd LOVE to have a D-600 and a couple C8s...

I'm seriously looking at the combination of the Super Flightcase /BG-300. That's a total of 500 watts with 12 x 5" speakers which are comparable to 3 x10" speakers. Is my math right? I'm wondering if this will be enough volume wise for medium rooms with no PA support.

We are talking a pop/rock group with drums, two guitars, sax and vocals. I've been able to handle this situation with my Trace Elliot AH350SMX and TE 2x10 and 1x15 cabinets. Maybe I should consider another PJB option?

For lighter gigs I now use a GK MB150E with the matching extension so maybe I should keep that and focus on a separate rig for louder gigs? Any advice is appreciated.

Another question for those who've used the Double Four and Bass Cub: how do they compare?

I can't imagine the Cub being THAT much louder than the Double Four, given the minor differences in power and speaker area. And though I double, I don't imagine ever really using the Cub on a doubling gig; I'd be using something a bit bigger. So my main use would be mainly for upright bass - smaller gigs and quiet rehearsals - and electric bass solo practice at home. It would be nice to have the XLR DI that is on the Cub, but even then, I can always use the line out of the Double Four.

I would consider the Briefcase, but I'm looking for something I can throw over my shoulder while I'm dragging around my upright. If I want to carry a 30lb amp, I'll just take the Super Flightcase.

So I got to check out a Cub today (with a Stingray Classic - loved it!), but the shop didn't have the Double Four anymore. So, question remains: in terms of output and fullness of sound, how does the Double Four compare with the Cub? I'd just get the Cub, except I also like the idea of battery power.

I own the double four and have used the Cub at a jam session. After playing through the Cub and hearing a bunch of other bass players use it it didn't seem to sound bigger than the 2x4. I didn't get to crank it though - it might have a bit more max volume - but it didn't 'feel' significantly bigger than the double four.

Sometimes I regret returning my PJB Bass Cub. I had ordered a new one at a significantly lower than usual price. I loved the form factor, and it sounded nice, but I just felt I spent too much money on an amp with way too little volume. Now I realize some of the volume problem was my own fault as I was too ignorant to realize my active bass didn't need to be padded by the Cub's active input. The passive input actually works better for my bass. But it really wasn't much better than playing through my home DAW's Alesis Monitor Ones.

So I returned the Cub and bought a used Super Flight Case for a little up-charge. The Super Flight case (at the price I paid) is a better watts per dollar value. But awkward as it's over-powered for home practice but not loud enough for a band.

Wish the Cub was less expensive so I could justify having one for quiet bedroom practicing.

The Super Flightcase is perfect for my upright gigging needs, and it's A-Ok for home practice with my electrics (never plug in the upright at home...), but it's definitely a bit large and bulky for my upright rehearsals, which are usually in someone's home or teaching studio.

I was REALLY impressed with the Bass Cub in the shop, but I'm giving the Double Four a shot before I decide.

Looking for the answer to this same question. I have a Super Flightcase I'm considering adding the BG300 (or maybe a pair?) to see if I can cut down on hauling time to the gig.

My PJB Briefcase was posted earlier in this thread. Here's my dearly departed livingroom mini rig of doom:

Looking back at this pic, I just realized how well the Suitcase/4B matched the HiFi in the background!

Please add me as a member. I will post photos of my Suitcase and 4B as soon as I can. Thanks.

I had a fun little photo shoot a couple weeks ago, just to practice some photography. Didn't take any pics of the complete Super Flightcase, but I liked these few I got. If you're facebook friends with Phil, you probably saw them already. But here they are.
