A very cool minor interpretation of Feelin' Groovy pops up around 15:15 and eventually evolves into a killer hoe-down (or is it a hootenanny?) Major key version of Feelin' Groovy at 16:15 (Theme hits for real at 17:06).

My guess would be that you need a neck pickup for effective 'Philbombs', but maybe that is just me.

Yeah, I wouldn't want a single bridge pickup for doing the Phil thing. I generally favor the neck pup with the bridge blended to taste. I've also heard there have been a lot of QC problems with those Starfires. Definitely wouldn't buy one sight unseen.

Maybe try looking for the '90s Starfire reissue branded as Dearmond? I know the body shape is not exact, but they were routed for two pickups.

There are other options. You could mod an Epi Jack Casady bass?

Yea ive been lookin for a dearmond but theyre harder to find than I wouldve thought.

Unfortunately the jack casady bass is long scale. Too bad, id love to have the silver burst, its a beauty.

Phil's son Brian welcomed his own son into the world yesterday... Levon Lesh (named after the late, great Levon Helm, of course).
