Philosophical question about birth year basses

I don't think you were alert enough when you were born to remember what a bass of that year looked like. I think you just have GAS.

I had a birth month and year 61 P bass, it was a cool conversation piece, but in the end who really gives a s***.. and it was nice to play on certain occasions but it spent most of its time locked up on my gun safe, I sold it this past summer and haven't looked back...

I bought a birth year bass a few years back. 78 P-bass. Hated it. Its the only 78 P I ever played, so I'm not sure if it was just this one, or if they all were a little iffy back then. Was heavy as hell, weirdest neck ever, and the original pickups sounded like ass. Thankfully when I bought it the market wasn't sky high yet and only paid $500 for it. Sold it for $700 so it was worth the trial run to play a bass that was from the year I was born.

I did however buy my son who was born in 2014 a matching US Fender Strat and Jazz bass in Candy Apple Red. He of course hasn't even touched them yet, but maybe if he gets in to music at a later age he'll appreciate them and use them. Till then I will play with them around the house occasionally and put them back in their cases in the closet.

Never heard of it, don't care, and if I did, I can't imagine a 1961 Precision being crazy expensive. But I surely wouldn't spend $6,000 on one as I've never spent that much on ANY bass; and I have some pretty nice basses...

It is here. Never heard of it before, though I can see it as a bit of fun. In all though, I am very happy with the instruments I have, and the objective mind says that there is more variety and choice today than there has ever been, and finish and build quality are at levels that couldn't even be imagined half a century ago.

I get what youre saying and I do feel that it compromises the whole point. But look on the bright side, itll be less to operate that a C4 corvette, and will likely drive better as well.

I was 9 years old when the Fender Precision was introduced. But there is a guy on Craig's List that will sell me a 1943 P for only $14,500

I am actually a professional philosopher, but alas have no views on the original question. Like others, though, the question did make me go looking. I found a 1957 P-bass for 9,950, and a "nearly mint" one for 25,773...plus 138 for shipping--whereas the 9950 was free shipping. I never had a car that cost that (but they all had free shipping), nor that much in the bank. But I've had some fun. Next week: 61.

You forget how old some of us are! In my case, sure, for those two and more years older, nope, there are none to buy at any price. None except for the extremely rare Tutmarc and I think it will take more than a week to find one at all, much less the right year.

I was born within a few months of the Precision. I'd be satisfied with a replica and Squier makes them. However, I've switched to short scale ... so I bought a Squier 51 guitar ripped two strings off it and seriously downtuned that sucker! Close enough for me!!

I was born in 1960 but was not yet playing bass. I started in 1974, in '76 bought a '71. A birth year bass would be cool but it is also cool to be able to make my mortgage payment, pay my bills, retire someday, etc.

'77 was not a great time for Fender but I managed to find an original 77 jazz that wasn't stupid heavy. It was the magic preEB phase for music man so I picked up a stingray from then too. They're both nice to play.

Nope! I was 11 months old when the Fender Precision began production in October '51
