Photos: Inside a Flite 2x8 Cab

[Standalone]

No Crossover-- a resistor or something (edit: I'm told this is a capacitor...) on the way to the small (3" or so) driver.

visible below are the two woofers, and the cylindrical enclosure for the small driver. Just below it, running across the cab, is the long, wide port.

I'm having a problem with a low level square-wave distortion going on when I play at low levels, and I've become convinced it's the cab-- I posted another thread about tracking down the problem. But I thought the problem would be in the crossover.... hmm.

The capacitor IS the "crossover" in this case. Usually, crossover circuits are more complicated because they limit in more than one way (i.e. send ONLY highs to the tweeter, ONLY lows to the woofers). This setup blocks lows to the HF driver, but lets everything through to the 8" speakers.

Tracked it down. It's clearly coming from one of the woofers, so I can't think of anything other than an issue with the woofer itself. Bummer.

Why are the speaker mounting screws all rusted?

yeah. The cab's got issues. Nothing inside makes me think that it's been in a flood or something, but it's obviously done hard time in some damp area or another. Nothing else is musty or rusted. It might just be that the screws were extra cheap...

I didn't pay much for it, and half expected some issues. It just seemed like the perfect top box for my GK. The mids and highs sound so good out of my 212, though, that I guess I never really needed it.

It's not good that the blocking cap is hanging freely by it's wires. Eventually the leads are going to suffer metal fatigue from the constant vibration. It needs to be supported to prevent this.

Interesting construction. Looks like foam core ply. I bet it's light!

You could also put in a 3-way x-over to run it with your 2x12, the 2x12 as a sub.

Also, what is that small driver? It's not a tweeter, is it? It's heavier than I expected it would be... and that flat part around the cone seems to be some kind of suspension.

Seamonkey- I think that 8 is more of a mid driver, and I'm guessing I need something with a greater excursion or whatever-- designed to put out some bass.

The cab is meant to be a full range cab-- my thinking was mostly to set it over by our drummer and guitarist so that they can clearly hear me, but simplification is king at the moment.

If I find an extra cheap head somewhere, it might come live in the house so I can play here sometimes instad of only in the studio. As a practice cab, it can't be beat-- quick, even and bell-clear from low mids through highs. Just not much deep bass.

The Carvins do look like good mid-bass drivers to me, but you'd have to contact Carvin for the parameters, and you can use winisd to see if the would work for you. I don't know of any pro level 8" low frequency drivers. Maybe flightsound is around to sell you some replacements?

I should check-- I know that they were kind of out of the picture for a while, but it seems that they are now tooling up a website and such to get back into business.
