The 50s I have played have been worth the extra 2 bills. Awesome fit and finish, and sound very sweet.

I can't speak for the newer Standards.

New standards = vastly improved over pre-08 MIMs. Way, way better. The diff between a new standard and a 50s is not worth the extra imo.

ill have to test drive the 50s to make a fair assumption.
but i agree the new MIMs are one of the best pbasses under $600 ive played.

I certainly am not going to put down any MIM Standard P,
I gigged with my '01 for a bit (and enjoyed it) before getting my first '50s Classic P.

There are still some differences between the two basses, which of course, really only matters to the individual buyer.

The extra $$ for the Classic '50s P over the Standard P, is based on, from what I've found:

- Vintage pups vs. Standard pups
- American Vintage saddle vs. Standard saddle
- Vintage style frets vs. medium jumbo
- Vintage neck plate vs. standard
- reverse tuners
- Original truss rod nut vs. hex nut
- vintage styling anodized aluminum guard
- "C" shape neck vs. Modern "C" shape
- deluxe gig bag vs. standard gig bag
- nickel/chrome hardware vs. chrome

The burst on my '01 standard is a laminate, it isn't on my '50s P, not sure about the newer Standards.
I can't comment on the over-all finish etc. of the two basses.

I imagine the body wood is different?

So, if one is looking for a '50s style bass ..... the MIM Classic P is the one to get, if one is looking for a good ol' regular P-bass for less bucks, the MIM Standard is the way to go.

ive played the new standards, and they are one of the best ive played. i havent had a chance to get ahold of a 50s pbass yet, but i bet i would love it.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. The more recent Standards are pretty nice. Heck, I have a Squier Jazz V that is gig-worthy. But that's another thread (literally).

But I have to give the nod to the '50s for all the the list that bass-flyer laid out. Does have a nice vintage vibe to it.

While you're getting the Strat(?) and saving some coin, just keep your eyes open for a used 50s or a Roadworn. And if/when you're tired of waiting, get the Standard.

I don't have any kind of inside info, but something tells me its about time for a MIM Standard P5!!!

FWIW ..... I snagged my '06 '50s P off eBay back in '06 for $400 + shipping, new .... tags and all.

I also got my '09 '50s P off eBay last year, $501 shipping included ....
New ... tags and all.
