From the factory that 460 would have been a disappointment. With the low compression ratios and smog regulations of the day, you'd be lucky to get 275 horsepower our of it.

I remember the range of '73-76 American cars with something less than fondness.

Things did start getting better in '77 IMO.
My dad got a '77 Olds 98 and it was a significantly better car than his '73 98 (which was an extremely LARGE pile of rolling bat guano).

My father bought a 1973 Buick Electra that I remember fondly but my older brother told me recently that it was a horrible car mechanically. Just a total dog all around. Then he bought a 1977 Chevy Caprice Classic which needed a transmission around 1981. After that it was an excellent car, good looker. I totaled that one for him.

I'm actually considering getting one of these if I end up buying a vacation home in my new/old neck of the woods...it was an official military vehicle back in the day so there's no real shortage of parts for them...I might throw in a newer engine, though, since the original ones are vastly under-powered and inefficient...

Well, we had this beast when I was a kid:
Took many vacations with it towing a camper all over the country with my brother and I sitting in the facing rear seats, so i have fond memories. The Fords in the family after that were dogs, though. Especially the Fairmont wagon. What a rolling chunk of fetid vomit that thing was. Oy.

Our waterpolo trainer had a VW 412.
The team drove am orange VW T2.
While in Germany I had a VW Variant. Like the Squareback stateside. I needed it when the TR7 was down for maintenance!

I had a squareback for a time. Did 360's (but avoided hitting anything) on the 10 freeway in Los Angeles on a very rainy day, changing lanes. That was fun, but not nearly as much fun as when the hood latch failed on the 101 freeway at speed, banging up into the windshield. Had to stick my head out the window to try to get to the shoulder, and being L.A. of course nobody wanted to slow down to let me over, despite seeing that my hood was up over my roof...
In 2018, this 1948 Norman Timbs Special was destroyed by fire.
Someone is now attempting to restore it.

Nice to see they actually used the real body style of the 70's truck versus some 'kinda looks like it but doesn't' more modern retro (Cough, GM, I'm looking at you) design that falls short of the old school vibe.
