I'm not sure I could do just 3, but they'd probably be:

Fender MIA passive P/J (for the classic rock and R&B tones)
Yamaha TRB6PII (here's where price must be no object; this is a $3200 bass for jazz, fusion, and general all-round bass goodness)
MM HH SR5 (Da Foonkmeister, also a good candidate to be the one and only bass)

Honorable mentions would be an MIA G&L L2500, MM Sterling HH and Fender MIA P and Jazz basses; the P/J is a compromise for a list of 3, primarily to get the P tone. I currently use my MIM Jazz for most things I would otherwise need a P for; turn off the bridge p'up, darken the tone a bit and the split-coil Ultra Jazz neck p'up comes pretty close; not as thick though.

Ya know... I consider myself extremely lucky... The three listed below give me all the creative versatility I ever need (especially the custom bass)... and since I'm old school, I don't really need to flounder in the world of 5, 6 (or more) strings (I might upgrade to a hipshot on my custom one day). ... and yeah, I'd love to have an upright but that's way to difficult to lug around.
