So, I was talking to a rep from Osiamo the other day, who is the US dealer of Pickboy picks. I asked him if he had any of the triangular bass picks that I saw on Amazon once. He wasn't quite sure what pick I meant, so he pulled out a triangle Rainbow one, that was 1.2mm. I assumed that was correct and took it home.

I tried it out on my Precision that night, and it was really comfy. Great tone from a pick too, a little brighter than others but more bottomy. I was very happy, so I decided to place an order.

On Osiamo's site, I saw they had the bass picks, and that they weren't quite what I took home that night - what I was given were the triangle Rainbow classics (which are ever-so-slightly rounded). I wondered if there was much difference, so I pulled the trigger on two sets of Pickboy Bass Triangle Picks, a 1.5 black set, and a 1.2 rainbow set.

I just got the bass picks delivered to my office today, and they certainly are NOT the rainbow classic traingle pick that I was given by the rep the other day. The black one is pretty big, but the rainbow pick is HUGE. It puts my thick glass pick to shame - it doesn't even fit in a large pick holder. Here's it next to a standard planet waves celluloid pick I own:

Certainly Pickboy knows how to treat us bass players. I can't wait to try it later! Have any of you tried these monsters?

  2. Woah... See the desk on that pick?! Gotta get me one of those :D

I tried one for a while years ago. Wasn't really my thing, but i was kind of an anti-pick bass snob then. I've gotten over that, but I haven't dug out the giant triangles since.

PickBoy is a great company. They were my pick of choice when I was playing a lot of guitar.

Do you have a link to Osiamo's site?

Cool. I have a pack of the rounded Fenders somewhere in Heavy, but I found Pickboys to be a little more to my liking. They are thicker, but they retain flexibility. Plus these are huge - you'd never mistake this for a regular guitar pick.

Also, the Dunlop Ultex are really nice too. Planet Waves picks are nice, but the X-Heavy ones are pretty stiff.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been looking for some new giganto-picks to go along with my V-Pick and Gravity picks.

I just grabbed a pack of 10 Rainbow picks from Amazon that will be here on Thursday in time for my gig this Saturday.

  10. I've used the heavy Fender triangles, pretty good.

  11. I might get one just to be like "Oh yeah, I use those huge picks.."

Any chance you could post a pic of the Pickboyh black triangle pick alongside the standard one too?

Actually I'd really like to know how long the sides of the black ones are if it wouldn't be too much trouble. The dimensions on the amazon description are just about the thickness. I want something 1 3/8 inches on a side like the old herdims and wonder if the black Pickboy's on amazon fit the bill.

Here's a side by side of the rainbow, the black, my big glass pick, a standard wide pick, and a normal pick.

Which one is the best pick for metal?

  15. Gravity picks are pretty cool. There was some guy showing them off several months ago in a thread someplace... I picked one up (no pun intended) and I really liked it. It was a bit on the light side but it felt nice.

Thanks for the tip. If I'm using a pick, it just has to be a large triangular pick. I've gone through hundreds of the tortoiseshell fender triangles over the years.

I am using dunlop tortex green. I have always loved them. I have a physical issue that doesn't allow me to really use fingers well, and I grew up a guitar player using a pick. I am looking for something to get a less zippy sound. I can't find these dang things anywhere.

    I was intrigued by this.
