Knowing some guitar helps your bass playing...if for no other reason that if you get lost, you can always look over and see what chord the guitar player is playing.

The thing is, guitars are cool. I'm a bassist, but I can "play at" guitar. Nothing wrong with GASsing for a sweet handle. Plus, playing other instruments can only help your bass playing.

You don't need to become a guitar player as your main instrument, but being able to look at another guitar player and understand what they are playing is a priceless skill for all bass players surrounded by a world of guitar players with poor communication skills. It will get you more work and you'll be a much better team player.

And if composing is your thing, it's much easier and rewarding with proficiency on a chord instrument. I wish I had time to get proficient at guitar, or even better, had started at a young age. Picking up new instruments as an adult is slow going. I barely have time to keep up with both electric and upright these days in the adult world.

I was a professional keyboardist for years. Felt that drums was my best instrument. Yet, I have a closet full of acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and basses. They are just too easy to collect.

The last couple of months I've been working pretty hard on guitar. When pick up a bass I feel free and unfettered, but as I continue studying guitar I'm focused on scales, chord tones, inversions, and modes. Having been an ear player on bass for a few decades, I'm actually invigorated to be working differently, and it's already paying dividends on both instruments.

thanks for this. let me check out my sample library with my midi controller for guitar patches.

Playing guitar to MIDI can be really cool, but for practical purposes, a good sample library would have keyswitches trigger various articulations, and they're always designed with keyboards in mind. It's usually the lowest octaves on the keyboard that are used to switch between articulations like legato, spiccato, slurs, pizzicato, etc. (with a string instrument as example). I don't know how you would trigger those articulations with guitar/MIDI. Maybe there's a way to set up foot controllers?

I have a 12 string that I enjoy strumming on. And I also have a classical guitar that’s fun to play around with. Bass playing makes picking notes on a guitar much easier. But generally whenever I play guitar a lot I remember why I chose bass. Fretting chords just sucks.

My uncle (a bluegrass guitarist) started me on guitar as a toddler, and I didn’t take up bass until my teens. He also introduced me to mandolin & banjo. So, I’ve had that stringed instrument acquisition syndrome almost since birth.

That's fine.
Guitar makes you learn a whole lot of chords etc., you'll become a better bass player for it .... in the long run.

I started out on guitar and have had a professional quality one on hand since the mid 70s. Today I own 2, a 1994 American STD Strat, and a 2001 Taylor 510 dreadnaught, both bought new.

Over the years I’ve laid down more than a few guitar tracks, and it’s probably 10 years or better since I gigged as a guitarist. Being honest, it would take me a while to prepare for a guitar gig at this stage, if there are any gigs to be had.

I thought it was the most ugly boat anchor ever....Where's your LP's I asked. Fast forward to now; The Tele is the gold standard of 6 string electrics in my opinion. They can do everything. Plus for whatever reason my hands seem to know where to go without looking. In fact, I play it better with my eyes closed. Go figure. I really wanted to like the LP but never could gel with them...and I thought the Tele was a boat anchor.

The tele is not a sexy guitar. If I was a 13 year old kid I don't think I would gravitate toward it. I'd probably be all over the supercasters out there.
