...i was told that a good bassist should be "pick proficient." It's part of being a well-rounded bass player.

James Jamerson never used a pick. He was pretty good.

The advice given was absolutely correct: being fluent in pickstyle, fingerstyle, and slapstyle will increase one's marketability.

Sorry, I understood this as a categorical statement regarding the relative "goodness" of non-pick using players vs. pick using players, not as advice regarding the enhanced marketability of a player who is proficient in more than one right hand technique. Jamerson's mastery of the bass without a pick refutes the first interpretation, notwithstanding McCartney's mastery with one, but as you correctly point out, it has nothing to do with the second interpretation. Touché, mon ami!
