Pickup Matching??

So i have a Fender P Bass Special that has a P/J configuration. I put in Quarter Pound SPB-3's to replace the P pickup and put in a Fender standard jazz pickup for the bridge position. Running them together is not good at all. The tone gets sucked out major. Soloing each one, tone is back and all there. So my question is if the SPB-3's need to be matched with a SJB-3? I've checked my wiring numerous times and it's correct. The bass is also grounded properly. Also, the pickup heights on both sides don't seem to matter either. Anyone experience anything like this?

Try inverting the phase of one pickup, and see if that helps...

Flip the hot and ground wires on one pickup.
Essentially, wire it backwards...

That did the trick. Should this be a good rule of thumb for all passive P/J pickups?

Well, i would say yes, anytime you are getting the type of thin sound you were getting.
