Pickup placement locations…list?

I think you mean the opposite? the bigger the number the closer to the bridge.

The ‘51 P’s pickup is located closer to the neck than a J-bass. The ‘60s P with a split is closer to the bridge.

I really loved my J-bass but moved to a 4 string to change things up - a Peavey t-20… but on that MIM J5 I hung out between frets 7 and 11 so that shorter scale length probably had a big effect on how nice that pickup placement was for me at the time.

If you ever put a blend control on the parallel setting, I’d like to know.

I hadn't thought of that. I'm not sure how it would work. Do you mean blending a parallel and series mix?

I mean a blend between the coils only in parallel mode. Series has to be matched i think

Just bumping this thread, as I'm trying to figure out neck length on my 32" scale P51 bass.

Would the p51 pickup be essentially at the 24th fret position?

I'm laying out my fretboard to figure out my neck extension/dimensions.

So minusing one to create a 32" scale, I still have 24 frets

You'd want the pickup pole piece centreline located around 25.8" from front of nut. This is just beyond where a hypothetical 28th fret would be at 32" scale ( 25.65" from nut ie 32"x 28th fret constant .801)

My initial post was wrong . It should be 24.88" from nut to centreline of scpu pole pieces not 25.8". This would place the poles centreline around the 26th fret position on a 32" scale bass. Anyhow, might be a good idea to follow crazycloud's advice

Find out where the P51 is on a 34" scale re the nut, then multiply by 32/34 to place it at the same equivalent position on a 32".

The pickup on a 51 P is one fifth of the scale (6.8 inches) from the bridge - it ignores the 5th harmonic of the G string very well. On most basses, the G string is where it works the best as there is less compensation for intonation on that string. If you want a 32 inch scale to perform the same, you want a fifth of the scale (6.4 inches) distance from the bridge saddles. For those that use the nut as a reference, that would be 32 - 6.4 (25.6 inches) from the nut.

People lay out basses from the nut, because they don't know precisely where the bridge saddles will land, but acoustically, the distance from the bridge makes much more sense when calculating the effects of pickup positions on performance.

No you were right lol I had 25.7 from the data I have on pickups, and micguy has 25.6. so Ballpark theoretical 28th
