Pickup question?

Howdy.

I'm once again thinking about changing the pickups in my 57 precision bass.

I was wondering, which is considered a better pickup. A Lindy Fralin p-bass pickup, or the stock stuff.

I like a deep smooth sound, I play finger style and my usual genre's of music are blues, classic rock, and I guess stoner rock. Which pickup would be best for this type of music.

I usually have the treble rolled all the way off on my bass and amp.

FYI I use James Jamerson signature strings.

It would be hard to beat the Seymour Duncan Antiquity for P bass for the sound you want. You might consider experimenting with string changes first as they can make a big difference, even using flatwounds. I'm assuming you don't have a vintage 57 P bass, but a reissue.

The Seymour Duncan Basslines Quarter Pounder will give you a more aggressive modern sound and would be better, in my opinion for the blues/ rock stuff. I have one in my 78 P and I love it. It's pretty versatile for other styles too.

But a lot of guys like the Lindy Fralin. I've only tried one in a Lakland and it was okay but I didn't have the stock Fender P pickup to compare.

I use flatwound strings on my 57 RI. I do have a vintage 58 p-bass strung up with dead rotosound flats that sounds ok.

I'll look into the seymour duncan antiquities.
