pickup replacement for a hofner clone

As much as I love the look and feel of my rouge vb100, one of the pickups dosnt work and the other is loaded with microphonics:crying: . I would try to pot it but it appears to be welded to the pup cover.

Anyone know where i can get some replacements for >100?:help: :help:

I know someone is gonna say ebay but ive been checking there for months and only found one pair, which happened to be priced obsenely high.

Are you sure your pickup is dead? Make sure it's not the switch first. As far as potting the other pickup goes. The cover is soldered to the base plate. But it doesn’t matter; you can pot it with the cover on.

A good pickup man can fix your dead pickup and pot the other for under $100.
 
how would i go about potting it inside the cover. heres some pictures of the back of the pup.

all i can find that would let in the wax is that one little hole and that dosnt really look big enough to do any good, is it?
the microphonics are really what got to me, other than that i love the tone and completely dont mind one of them not doing anything
 
I pot a pickup with the cover on by submerging it in a 130-F (54-C) degree bath of wax comprised of 80% paraffin and 20% bees wax. This ratio is something of an industry standard. It’s a good mix that insures the wax will saturate the coil well and will harden yet won’t become brittle. Leave then in long enough for the entire pickup to reach 130 degrees. Move them around occasionally to see if any more air comes out. The hole you see is plenty large enough. a double boiler in the yard is one way to heat the wax. I use specialized wax melting pots.

There is a bit of danger involved in heating large amounts of wax. Never, Never Never!!! try to do it on a pot on the kitchen stove! There are some rules and warnings to fallow.

So let's review the rules of wax potting shall we?

Rule#1 Always know the temperature of your wax.

Rule#2 ALWAYS KNOW THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR WAX!!!
A good thermometer isn't expensive these days. Buy one from Bed Bath and Beyond.

Rule#3 Have a good dry chemical fire extinguisher.


Rule#4 Take your time.
It can take hours for a cold wax pot to melt all it's wax. No short cuts are to be taken.

Rule#5 Don't splash the wax.

Why so much caution? Well, there are some dangers. Let's examine the dangers a bit closer.

Danger #1 FIRE!!
The flash point of Paraffin wax is 375-F(191-C) degrees. At this temperature it will ignite and burn. Lucky for us we don't need the wax to be nearly that hot. In fact, most pickup bobbins would warp or melt at those types of temperatures. 130-F(54-C) degrees will do nicely. It's hot but won't burn your skin. It's safe for all but the most delicate bobbins and is well under the danger point of Paraffin wax.

How do I put out a wax fire ?

If molten wax should ignite unplug the wax pot. The wax may be extinguished by any of the following methods:

1.Smother the flame.
2.Sprinkle baking soda into the pot.
3.Use a Dry Chemical fire extinguisher. Be careful not to spray to close to the flame as the force of the extinguisher can spread the flames.

Danger #2 INHALATION!!
The MSDS for paraffin states that fumes from over heated paraffin may be mildly irritating to nose, throat, and eyes. Usually not toxic. I have noticed this sort of thing in my work. Fumes from hot wax can mess with my sinuses a bit. I now make sure that my wax never gets above 130-F(54-C) degrees and is always covered. This reduces the amount of fumes I am exposed too. It also help the wax melter maintain it's temperature. If you find your are sensitive to the fumes move to fresh air. If that doesn't help call a doctor.

Danger #3 SKIN BURNS
While not a primary skin irritant, melted paraffin wax can cause thermal burns. The severity of your burn will depends on the temperature of your melted wax. Yet another reason I keep my wax at 130-F(54-C) degrees. Treatment for wax burns are as fallows:
1. Wash with soap and water. Call a doctor if irritation continues.
2. Burns-flush with clean cool water on burn area and contact doctor immediately. Do not try to remove wax on 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

Here is a little more information from the MSDS.

1. Parental guidance and supervision is mandatory if material is going to be melted or used. ***Children could be severely burned ***.
2. Warning: Incorrect heating of this material could result in a fire.
3. Fire extinguisher: A dry chemical fire extinguisher should be available if material is heated.
4. If heated: a well-ventilated area should be used.
5. Always melt by heating in a pan over boiling water as in a double boiler. Never melt in a pan over fire, hot plate or in a hot oven. Do not heat with open flames or open electrical coils. Accepted heat sources are heat transfer fluids (steam, hot water, oil, etc.) or sealed electrical resistant heaters. Do not heat above the flash point. Wax can catch on fire if over heated.

SECTION VIII - SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS & COMMENTS

1. Keep away from & open flame. Always melt by heating in a pan over boiling water as in a double boiler. Wax can catch on fire if over heated. See line #5, Section VII
2. Store in a cool dry place.
3. Keep material out of reach of children
4. Have a CO2 or dry chemical fire extinguisher available in the area in case of fire.
5. Parental guidance and supervision required, especially, if material is being heated to soften it for blending with other material or for a particular application
. ***Children could be burned***

Alright, now ya'll have been warned. Treat this stuff with as much respect as you would a cherry bomb or a router and you should be fine. Oh... and one other thing. Don't pour hot wax down your sink - it will cool there and plug up the pipe. Ask me how I know... look...it was many years ago ok? Geeesss...

And remember, it would likely be easier and cheaper...... and safer...... to let a pro do it.
 
A double boiler on the kitchen stove should be fine if you keep a close watch on the temp. Don’t let it get above 130 degrees and have a fire extinguisher handy. Letting it get to hot is not only a fire hazard but it could melt the bobbins or the insulation on your magnet wire depending on what kind it is.
 
That ring looks way too thin for a DS, but who cares what it takes, I'd put one in if I had access to one and a router.

But this guy likes his tone already. Oh BTW if you have a soldering gun with 50 watts or more you could probably take those covers off, that's just solder, I've done it before on Les Paul pickups with less than 50 watts. I think taking the covers off before you pot it is a good idea and would probably yield better results.
 
Dark stars are way out of spudmasters $100 price range. They are too big to fit in the existing rings and routing this arched top hollow body bass isn't a simple matter. It would be real easy to end up with a pile of splinters.:D

Any time your potting a pickup with a metal cover you should pot it with the cover on because in some cases vibration between the cover and the base plate and even the magnets can cause some microphonics.
 
I have a Rogue copy of a Hofner, and I replaced the pickups with dirt-cheap EMG Select humbuckers. I had to enlarge the pickup cavities a bit, but the bass sounds much better. I bought them for less than $25 from Stewart-MacDonald, and I'm very happy with them. I rewired the bass so that it only has two volume controls.
