Pickups without copper winding..? Pickup wizards, Please look

Welll I’ll probably give up bass after today... and using my eyes and brain while I’m at it.

Sorry for the confusion and ignorance guys.
Just dipping my toes into this electronic stuff.

the coils are inside the cover... but in my defense they are covered within the cover.
I can’t see them but I can tel from the weight there is metal in there.

also half of these responses I’m seeing now weren’t showing in the thread when I was looking at it earlier...

But either way I’m not proud of myself.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I broke the magnets when I popped the top off.

can anybody comment on if those pots are stock or not?

I’ll probably end up replacing them anyway for the hell of it.

but thank you everybody for the help. Was exactly what I needed.

In my defense the coil was covered up inside the cover... but it is indeed there

Buy you an EMG GZR P/J pup set. It comes with the split P pup, the Jazz pup, the controls and output jack, and there's no soldering, it's wiring harness uses pins and female connectors, it's plug n play. Everything you need in one package. They are a pretty good bang for your buck.

I prefer Aguilar myself, but the GZR set are good pups and I have an EMG GZR P pup in one of my basses and have no intention of replacing it with anything else unless it quit working, then I would replace it with another EMG. It does the job I need it to do in that bass and does it very well.

You can order them from Sweetwater, GC, MF, and host of other places, even EMG themselves.

How much did they pay you to say that...

haha no but I really appreciate that.
that was gunna be my next question was some suggestion for solid budget electronics. Ill definitely check those out forsure.

If anybody else has come across anything else that inspires them to make a competitive if love to hear it.

(As long as it doesn’t leave any un-used holes in the pickguard. I don’t mind routing out part or drilling new holes but I just don’t want to plug holes or fill gaps.)

The EMG GZRs are pretty nice. And it's nice that when you buy the PJ set, they give you everything you need (wiring, pots, jack, screws, etc).

But it's hard to recommend pickups to other people, since it's such a personal choice based on the tone you want. It looks like you're going to need a new pickguard too...

A magnet won't produce an electrical signal, by itself- the principle of a pickup is this:

- A metallic string or other object that moves near a coil of wire can create a fluctuating magnetic field- this is called 'inducing current'. Similarly, sending current to a coil creates a magnetic field that affects the frequency response of the coil- this is how crossover coils work (and others) and the reason hotter pickups aren't as bright-sounding as lower output pickups.
- Placing magnets in the coil makes it much more sensitive than just a piece of metal or using nothing in the coil.
- The magnetic fields' disruption happens whether the object moves in any direction WRT the coil because it's the changing distance that causes the magnetic field to change and affects the strength of the signal. Think about the science classes that told us about North and South poles when we learned about magnets.

The photo shows the yellow wire going to the cover, which is where the coil is stuck, as you found. If the wire breaks, it's not always easy to reconnect it.

a little late on the draw there, eh?

I’m really not too picky, just wanted to checkout some different options.
I’ll make due with the tone.
I don’t think I’d stop listening to somebody because their pickups changed, so I’m really not too worried.
Just wanted something people found to be really quality for the price since I don’t plan on spending too much.

If somebody enjoyed a set in their experience, I’d love to hear about it.

And why would I need a new pickguard? You don’t like the ‘a-metal-plate-and-big-chunk-missing’ style?

Im glad it all worked out and we didn’t have to conduct a seance with Michael Faraday or James Clerk Maxwell to figure it out. ;)

cool bass, kind of a "hamer cruise bass" vibe of a slimmed-down jazz.

the pickups were cheese anyway, no great loss. put something good in there and you're in business (i vote vintage P pickup du jour and a dimarzio area J bridge pickup)

This ^ Especially a noise reducing J pickup. I never understand folks who purchase an expensive P pickup for a PJ, then ruin it by only purchasing a single coil J pickup. I have also had good luck pairing a P pickup with a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz, an SD Stack Jazz, (neck version), and an SD Apollo. The DiMarzio Model J might works with a DiMarzio Model P, but is too grindy to play well with a more traditional toned P pickup.

I'm surprised that more pickup makers don't make bespoke J's for their PJ sets and match them well (at least in terms of output). It seems like most just recycle a J from a Jazz set.
