Pitch Shift Software

My lead singer asked me for suggestions on pitch shifter software. This is just so she can hear the singing in the key we do it in before we rehearse. I know there is a lot out there but would like to hear your suggestons to separate the good from the bad.

I use Audacity for podcasts and compilation work - free, open source software, btw. It has a nice pitch shift option: load your mp3, pitch it up or down to the required key, save it as a new mp3. (I usually add our band name to the file/track name, so I can keep it separate from the original.)

You can also use it for multi-track recording if you have a decent computer interface, slowing down tracks to learn parts and all kinds of other neat stuff.

Audacity.. it's easy to use, free and the pitch shift is fine for just learning. I use it for exactly this purpose for my wife singer who always changes the key of every song she ever sings!!

At extremes it sounds squeaky or like Laurie Anderson, but hey - its FREE!!

You can't add effects with the song playing or while it's paused, and without first selecting. Press "Stop" then select the portion of the song you want to edit (or select the entire song), then go to Effect > Change Pitch.
