pj or j with serial mod?

hi all

first post!

i have done as much searching and reading as i can

i am about to buy the sx p/j ash (the j body one)
but came accross a post about the serial mod
on a j giving better tone options than a pj

on looks, i prefer the maple/ash sx j bass with the blocks
but like the idea of pj versatility

does the serial mod give a decent p sound
if it does ai suppose i have a full j with a P option
whereas the pj loses the neck j pup altogether

can this be doen with a push/pul pot?

any advice welcome

i know most will say get a p and a j
but, i am a guitarist primarily and this
is my first a possibly last bass

kind regards

Get the PJ. The SX P pickups are really nice. The J pickups on their own sound a bit thin to me.

EagleMoon is wise. The parallel/serial option on a Jazz makes way less difference than the P/J. P/J's have more body/lower mids, IMHO.

A Jazz with the bridge pick-up favored is one of the important signature sounds of a Jazz, and a P/J does that very well. In addition, a P/J does P perfectly, but more important, it does P/J! :eyebrow:

thanks guys

you know how it is when you read too much on the web...

i have totally made up my mind on which model
about a million times, only to read something else
and start doubting, thinking and then more reading...

i do prefer the blocked neck on the ash jazz
(the offset dots on the pj ash are a bit urgh)
but the sound is more important that the aesthetics

thanks and regards

Well, I soooo disagree. I have a few SJBs and I have an SPB (PJ style). My SJBs with series mod do a P sound way better than my SPB does ANY of the J sounds with the exception of the bridge only.

Were you comparing SX SPBs and SX SJBs? Both with stock pups? Well, anyway YMMV.

Well written and right on the point!

It's not a "serial" mod, it's a "series" mod. You can put pickups in series, where one's - goes to the other's +, or you can put puckups in parallel, where the +s go together, as do the -s. There is no such thing as "serial".

thanks all, i have ordered the spj ash, done deal!
i might mention that im in ireland so its a bigger decision
as the postage is 70bucks and i cant really return it

spambot, thanks for the correction,
i should remember "series"...
i wired my les paul with the 21 position jimmy page mods!
including series/parallel amongst many others!
