PJ tone hype

Big powerful sound, with good bite , grind, and snarling mids. The best of both worlds. The p with the bite of the j , the snarl of the j with more bottom end. Sits where it should naturally in the mix. What's not to like ? I usually favor the p just a bit.

I have a P, a P/J and a Jazz.
The P/J has 2 vols and 2 Tones.
I set both Vols on full, P Tone just north of center, around "6", and the J Tone backed off 3/4 or close to a "3".
Great sound. Thick and articulate, differing from the jazz with a thicker bottom end and very articulate when played over the J pup which is centered between the BA2 bridge and the pickguard.
I like it very much.
White with tort just like the Jazz.

What is that hype about PJ basses?

Is it only me or does the PJ pickup config sounds like ... thin? With an anoying (slight) ring in the upper mid area, around 4-5Khz?...

I've had a few PJ basses, tryed different pickups. I always hear the same thing. In different amps or DI ...

+1 for not thin sounding. A few PJ's here, both active and passive, various pickups. All sound different.

None sound "thin" in any way. Never heard anyone characterize a PJ as sounding thin. Is there something wrong with yours?

I like the PJ too (mainly because I love the P so much) Had a US Lakland Bob Glaub PJ once that sounded just like your most favorite Nashville record. But who gives a crap what I, or anyone else for that matter, likes? play what you like.

Well... With both on you get an articulate P bass. A snarling, angry demon that likes to kick.

Hey Aussie!! I wrote down your setting for PJ with V/T/V/T a few months ago as I was educating my self to make a decision on what configuration I want in a PJ.I have a PJ5 with V/T/V/T & man that setting just kills!! yes very articulate. and still has bite. thanks again.

I had a '90s MIJ P and added a J pup and a selector switch, keeping the original volume and tone circuits.
All it did was add clarity, I never used the switch and didn't feel a need for separate controls.
It lost none of what the P does and added something I thought was lacking.

Not for everyone, apparently, but certainly didn't sound thin at all, maybe I just got lucky.

I tried the Fender Deluxe PJ bass (passive model) just last week at Guitar Center. The P bass pickup had that classic deep, warm tone that so many yearn for and the Jazz pickup had the notorious growl. Combining the two opened up plenty of possibilities, nothing anyone would call thin, and the tone control was very responsive, more so than quite a number of basses I've tried out over the course of the last few months.
I was plugged into an Acoustic B100 MKII, but next time I try one of these out at a different GC I'll play it through a Markbass CMD-21P (my amp) and I'll bet my left eye this bass will sound even better.
I'm definitely going to buy this bass and when it's mine I'll never bother looking at another Fender.
It delivers everything I want from a bass.
Looks great in Sea Foam Pearl, too.
