This one has a MM style humbucker and a Split P, along with volume / tone stacked x2 on the controls. Plus I added a switch for the MM pup to run it series / single coil / parallel.

This particular model you can't do the MM style and single coil for the neck, but you can on their bass called the Paddock, and probably a few others too.

I'm hoping to eventually try a Reverend Mercalli, but as far as I know they build those basses with more of a chunky neck than a slim Jazz style. They look rather monstrous in terms of tone on tap and they consistently seem to list with quite manageable weights.

Any-who, these have pickups of the P/MM layout and they're passive... and some of them have a truly funky purple finish

Hi. I had a play of what may be the perfect bass (for me) and wondering where I could get one.
It was precision style body with precision neck pickup and a musicman stingray style bridge pickup and a jazz style neck.
It was a custom build but does anyone make something like this?

This is the best way to get one IMO. Just have Warmoth make a body with P and MM routes. You can pretty much then put any neck on it you want.

I have a Warmoth dinky P With just the P pickup currently installed and I plan to do just that. I want to route for the MM just behind the P. I have an MM pickup already, I just need to get competent and brave enough to do the routing myself. I have a router and template, I just want more practice because I don’t want mess it up. That’s a gorgeous bass, BTW.

First, thanks. I love it. The exact P and MM locations are too close together for them to be routed without the chance of chipping between them. That was Warmoth's take at the time. Quit frankly I don't remember which one they shifted just enough and it doesn't really matter. I wasn't looking for an exact repro of either bass. The body (mahogany/maple cap) and neck (Macassar Ebony) already precludes that.

Like I said, it sounds amazing considering all the guts were in my parts box and not considered prior to build.

Built from a $100 kit. Mahogany body had the mm pickup cavity routed already, i added the precision pickup and kickass bridge. Seymour Duncan smb4a and fender original precision pickups. All in it was under $500 plus time and patience.
Sounds awesome. I was not trying to copy any particular tone so i was not concerned about specific pickup placement but i did have to re wire the p pickup to be in phase with the mm.

I'm putting together a Squier PBass with my kids, going to route a MM cavity and put one of those cheap pickups from Amazon in there (and for $16, why not give it a try)
Stock P pickup.


The MM pickup on the Sandberg's is closer to the bridge than a Stingray. But I get GAS when I look at a Classic TM

But hey, I agree with you all. My FAVORITE sound is the MM pickup. Second favorite is a P. What we need is one giant pickup smack in the middle of the bass which houses both sets of coils and poles. Someone create that please and credit ye 'olde Bassnugget. The pickup would be about the size of a pack of playing cards or so.

When Ibanez comes knocking to offer me a signature model I’ll have them do that. Move and modify the ATK pickup so it sounds like a P toward the neck and an ATK (Stingrayish) toward the bridge. Then make it look like one of those Ric-ish Roadstars

Yes! I have always liked the ATK. Helluva good sounding bass for not much outlay! That would be cool! 'Cause lately, the only bass I have been jonesing for has been the MM Caprice... which for some reason, they aren't making!! Ugh.

Yes, but also as mentioned, put the MM pickup where it belongs and move the P up a little as it is more forgiving on location for 'the sound'

Dang that’s nice. What kind of wood is that. What body style is that on the Warmoth site?

I had mine built with Warmoth. Duncan custom shop MM (this was the first MM pickup outside of Music Man), Lindy Fralin P, and an all ebony Jazz neck. With an 18v OBP-3 it is my #1.

Check the fender american deluxe p around 2004...i had the five string version. It has a large bridge pick up...a la musicman ..

It could work, but why do you need that precision pickup, i think it will missmatch that musicman bridge humbucker tone together. If you plan to use them independent, then try out.

I have the Ibanez Talman TMB310 it’s got P and a splittable JJ, best combo ever. Especially if you get a little higher quality pickups and preamp.

Some other options to consider are the Sims Quad pickups that allow you to have single/humbucker/split options in each pickup, and the Schecter CV-4 and 5 which has a similar mechanism!

Look up the Nordstrand Dan Lutz signature bass. That has both pickups as close to the sweetspots as they can get. I believe TBer @Jared Lash also has a bass with a P and a MM pickup butted right up against each other, so maybe he could shed some light on this configuration as well.
