Or, as others mentioned, modding an existing bass. I did so with a Squier VM P5 recently with fantastic results. Not a sweet spot install but that's not really what I was going for. Sounds great just the same!

I did some experimenting with the SS Stingray and SS Jaguar - the MM does fit with a P, but it's snug.

I agree that it CAN be pretty dang close and good enough (in my book). But most of the basses shown in this thread, the MM pickup is waay to close to the bridge, like they didn't even try, and just put a MM in the jazz spot. (which is the wrong spot, iMO).

I BELIEVE, the MM should be about touching the P Pickup in placement.

Devon Smullen has done a couple of these where the MM pickup is very close to the Musicman-correct location. It requires that the two pickups sit very close together and I personally find that to be a little ugly, but his basses are beyond superb and I have been tempted by the thought of a bass that really could produce a convincing Stingray tone as well as a P tone.

Yeah, the Harley Benton I posted has the MM too close to the bridge. Could you put a P pickup in the neck position of a HH Stingray or would that move the P too far from it’s own sweet spot?

Only one solution! Build a giant pickup with both pickups in it. One huge P/MM thing combined! I bet it would look a little crazy though.

Schecter has one that looks pretty good called the Stealth. It uses self-branded, but I'm sure you can replace those pretty easily if you don't like them. It also comes in a five-string model

I thought the MM pickup being close to the bridge would be bad too, but I found I like the sound when the MM pickup is a little closer to the bridge. It doesn't quite sound exactly like a Jazz pickup and it doesn't sound exactly like a MM, its a unique tone.

First, thanks. I love it. The exact P and MM locations are too close together for them to be routed without the chance of chipping between them. That was Warmoth's take at the time. Quit frankly I don't remember which one they shifted just enough and it doesn't really matter. I wasn't looking for an exact repro of either bass. The body (mahogany/maple cap) and neck (Macassar Ebony) already precludes that.

Like I said, it sounds amazing considering all the guts were in my parts box and not considered prior to build.

Yep. Based on measurements I’d almost have to mount the MM directly behind the P to be in the actual “sweet spot” for it. I’m not that concerned but I will likely route the MM closer (but not too close) to the P route than the bridge (like yours). That’s really my #1 concern doing it myself, leaving enough wood between the P and MM route not to chip or damage it.

Well, if money is no option, you can always do Sims Super Quads. P, J, and MM all in one.

I read that as a Jazz neck (slim profile, 1.5in nut, etc), not a Jazz neck pickup. Apologies to the OP if I misunderstood.

build one from parts ... built a cheap P/M for my young cuz ... low tuned BEAD ... cheap P & M Wilkinson pups .. plus left overs hanging around ... deglossed Matt Freeman body ...

hacked out hole for MM pup with Dremel = ha --- don't do that , unless you wanna order a pickup surround to cover up the carnage .. !
