PJ5 options

Hi all, did a search on this but the threads that came up were pretty old.

Really feeling like I need a PJ5 to round out the basses I have.

Considerations are:

Reggie Hamilton 5 MIJ - the Custom shop option is too rich for me. I heard there is an MIJ version but I have no idea where they are available. Any thoughts?

Sadowsky Metro PJ5

Do Lakland do a Skyline PJ5? Have not been able to find one on their site.

I assume that Lull, Valenti, and Nordy would also be options for one of these also.

Would love to hear opinions on price vs tone, feel etc. Tops I could pay is around $1700 which would mean some of these would only be an option if they came up 2nd hand.

I know of no Reggie Hamilton MIJ5. I only know of the excellent MIM Reggie four string. Lakland has a new Glaub 5 on the way, but no one actually has one for sakle yet as far as I know.

I agree that the BB series is excellent, and not just for the money either. If you don't mind 17-17.5mm string spacing, you should check one out.:)

That Skyline Glaub 5 has been "on the way" for the longest time. Would be cool if they did a PJ5 as an option, but haven't heard of that being a Skyline option.

Valenti would probably be my choice for new around your budget or a Fender P5 and route the bridge pup like GE was saying. I've been thinking of doing that myself. Or saving more and getting the Metro PJ5.

A used Mike Lull PJ5 is right in your budget. I have one and it's a great bass. The P pickup alone captures a great P tone; adding the J puts some bite to the tone and the J soloed is growly. The craftsmanship is superb and feel is super comfortable. You won't be disappointed.

I've posted this here a while ago, but since you brought it up, I had actually contacted Dan Lakin regarding this a few years ago (March , '06 to be more exact). Here was his reply:

"We are going to develop a Glaub 5 string this summer. It will be available in a P-J but the Osborn is not, it will stay JJ. So if you want that configuration you will have to live with a P-bass style body. The US version will come first the Skyline will follow. My guess is it will be at least 1 year before we have the Skyline out."

I think the US model has offered the option for at least a couple years, but I am surprised they haven't pushed the Skyline out... they'd prob sell a boat load of them. I know I would get one.

On another note, I've had a Lull PJ5 (w/active tone circuit)for about 8 months or so now. A fantastic bass in many ways (plays great,*very* light, finish and build are top-notch) but I just haven't completely warmed up to it for some reason. Not even really sure why. I had it on the trading block here a few months ago but pulled it to give it another chance. Had a good setup done at that time and found that I liked it more, but still thinking I may explore the PJ5 waters further at some point. I'd love to get my hands on a Sadowsky Metro P/J 5.
