Placing cabs on an empty flight case. Bad idea?

Yeah fair enough, 2 could be advantageous over a single large one. But I still want to know if the cavity of the case will cause resonance or smt:p

I used to stack my cabs like this, though generally it was when using a small cab and a tube head so the case was for the amp, perhaps a bit less cavernous than one designed for two cabs. Never an issue on stage.

In my old rehearsal space the guitarist had an empty road case for a large combo amp (fender twin) and would stack his 212 and head on top of that to hear it better. We did notice some resonance of that cab in the room, either with bass from my amp or even bass from adjoining rooms. It was annoying when we were hearing it cause by sound from other rooms, but was usually drowned out when we were playing. I don’t think it’s something that would happen with a well made case, his was a thin walled light duty case with little internal foam/padding.

if the case is lined with foam or other padding it shouldn't vibrate much. ive got a small case i bring with me. it carries my head, pedals and cables. during the gig, my jacket, spare cables, pedal case all stay in there, and the cab goes on top. i consider it essential equipment. i love my case.

He had a thing about being too loud. I never was, he hired me a bunch. In 1974 that band often made $80-$120 per night per member, which was fairly substantial for the time. Union rate was $32.50 a night (if memory serves).
Yeah, but if you kept the level under control, what was his hang up of the would-be visual of a supposed “big amp”? As if anyone in the audience would know or care.

That's the point, audience members, especially the jazz and performing arts venue crowd, see a big speaker system and freak out! This is exactly what got me interested in developing very compact speaker systems that kind of blend into the background.

It’s amazing how, for example, the towering inferno of an 85 watt Fender Dual Showman could strike fear into the hearts of polite people.

When they auctioned off Dusty Hills stuff, some of what caught me most was the custom cases they had. One was a dvd entertainment system, And Dusty had a custom case that would also act as his "chair" for the last years. Really awesome stuff tbh.

It's odd how much we visually percieve sound, even when were not actually visually percieving the sound.
I realize how it can go the other way…

But people in that kind of audience are expecting to see it, regardless of if the guitarist is really playing through a mic’d Deluxe. Those in the other kind wouldn’t know a 2x15 from an 8x10, or if a big box on stage is a speaker at all.

I can imagine the it would resonate, but it would be relative to how loud you are playing. If you are playing quietly the case would have less resonance than playing loudly. When playing loudly would the resonance of the case be noticeable at all over the volume coming from the cab? Also when playing quietly would the lessened resonance of the cab outweigh the volume of the cab? In both situations I cannot see the resonance of the case adversely affecting the performance of the cab and the convenience and protection of the case makes this a no brainer for me. If it is an issue in the rare room that haunts us all you can always raw dog the cabinet on the floor, your bass tone is going to be the the least interesting thing to happen in that room at the end of the gig!

Good luck and have fun!
