Plastic clamshell packages SUCK

It's ironic as #%*+%. The primary reason they are used is so people can view the product without opening the package, yet many of the products are bought on line, not in a store. Anyone see numbers as to the cost v. a cardboard box?

Whatever the claimed numbers are, they're false, as they don't count the environmental impact of fossil fuel derived plastic. Cardboard is at least sustainable if resources are managed properly.

. I was thinking cardboard would be cheaper. I would hope at least there could be a plastic that breaks down easier in landfills.

Clamshell packing also reduces the risk of theft for small items displayed in stores. Many online merchants are offering "frustration free packaging" for the products.

At least it's a valid complaint that you need a tool of some type to open them.

I used to see devices for sale to remove the cellophane wrap from CD's.

Knowing what kind of conditions products have to go through from the factory to the store, I'm glad they're secure. G-forces from impacts and lightning fast direction changes. Rain, mist, humidity. Bugs. And then the crazy shoppers who open boxes, pull out small parts or play switcheroo. Makes me feel better about the little extra effort to open it with scissors. And the plastic is usually recyclable (at least here).

I keep a pair of tin snips in a kitchen drawer. Works better than scissors or any type of blade i have tried.
