What is your goto bassline when trying to impress a lady or just a causal observer?

You're asking the wrong question. Don't play any basslines or bass solos in those situations. Play the vocal melody from a song everyone recognizes, or at least an instrumental theme, like the guy who mentioned Fur Elise.

The two-handed tapping intro to "Broken One" by Trivium. Looks way harder than it is to play, and sounds really awesome, too. Tapping looks more exciting than plucking, IMO. It just does that 'WOW he's tapping on BASS?!' type thing.
That said, outside of solos, where in a song will you find a tapping bassline? And how many bassists get solos in songs anyway?

If I'm trying to impress a causal observer, I usually play Schrodinger's Cat.

Otherwise, I usually sing to get attention. Or I start some groove with the drummer. If I am just picking up the bass to announce that yes, I am the bass player and I will be making a lot of noise this evening, I usually launch into a groove. Doesn't matter. Whatever seems to be catching at the moment.

I play a part of a musical trilogy I'm working on in Dm, which is the saddest of all keys, I find. People weep instantly when they hear it, and I don't know why.

Just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like..... I'm really influence by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those really.....

I usually say "Watch this! On the bass guitar, I &#@&[%@ rip!!!" Then I play "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and purposely mess it up. It usually makes them giggle.

Otherwise, I just play a very brief slapping something, Boogie Oogie Oogie, Brickhouse or some other easily recognizable old school funk bass line.
