played a Squier Jag today

ow, just, wow.

felt great, far better tone than I expected. I have to say it looked brilliant too. there wasnt a darn thing about this bass I didnt like. felt thinker than a jazz neck, it's a precision neck I assume?

I know what I'm asking the wifey for Christmas.

i played a few different ones at different gc to see how the qc on the bass was.
conclusion- great bass.

i have not played it standing up w/strap to see how it balances.

i love the p/j 2x vol, 2x tone

i had the fender jag bass, and for all the knobs, couldn't get a decent tone out of the thing.

i had a duff p/j same issue, always sounded hollow.

for some reason this bass sounded great.

the best tone i got was:
bridge pu volume tone, max, neck pu tone offf, volume 50%..

it was like the burpy jaco sound with booty added. great tone not achieveable on other VVT basses.

i would love to see in anther color besides black, but this bass has made my wish-list for a good cheap passive back up 5 string.

I was there with "Origami" when we both played with a couple of these suckers. Nicer than I had anticipated. If I needed a cheap 4 banger, this would be at the top of my list. It really did sound good and the playability was better than I had anticipated. Felt like it had vintage sized frets.

Normally I hate stacked knobs. For some reason they worked on this bass. One thing I would immediately alter though. I'd put a master volume knob on it. The vol/tone vol/tone thing was nice for the ability to dial in a variety of tones, but I can't see myself using those clunky things to kill volume on stage in between songs as I like to do.

You know Mike, I'd be happy to trade you a brand new Squier Jag refinished in a whatever color for that A neck precision you are sitting on. ;)

PS: Definitely has a jazz size nut.

I got to play three more Jags at three different stores on today's trip around - and I can say that all of them played exactly the same way as the Jag I have at home does!

The consistency of these basses makes me wonder how it's happening.

I mean - if people are complaining about QC being 50/50 or worse, I just didn't find any of that today.

Some of these basses were just opened and out of the box with no-one making any adjustments on them either!

MY Jag was fresh outta the box and my face was the first thing it saw since it left for the US from wherever it started it's journey to my hands.

It was as good as it could get when I brought it home.

So far, the Squier Jag is batting 1000.

Funny reading this, because I just came from my local Sam Ash (was there about 20 mins ago) and the Squier Jag they have hanging on their wall, right at this moment, is quite a nice bass for $299. Much nicer than their other Squiers (they also have a Fiesta Red CV, looks nice, not so much to play).

By the way, they have a used SX Jazz hanging on their wall for $299 as well - the tag on it says they go for $499 new. :rollno:
