It's only wrong if done by accident.

It's advanced technique if done deliberately to affect a desired sonic effect, and you're dealing with a legit drummer if they can stay on their pulse while you're doing it. Or if you ever play with a drummer that rushes, or in a band with a wannabe rock star that thinks the band follows their rushing riff instead of the following the drums while playing their riff in time, then you'd better be able to hold back.

One way to think of it, or practice it, is to listen to sounds of a synth sound that swells. The keys are hit dead on the beat, however the sound blooms after the attack.

Alternately, playing in front of the beat adds urgency. Alternating off/on the beat can sound unsettling like drunken staggering.

I was practicing this very thing with a well-known drummer earlier this week, and we had a good discussion about it. My usual way of doing it is to pluck while my foot is coming off the floor, if tapping it in time, and/or or roll the pad of the finger off the string for a muted and delayed attack & note bloom.

Isn't it musical context and the players/writers' intention, that dictate what's wrong, or when those ideas are then executed badly?
