None of the projects I play in play every Friday and Saturday night. Right now I play in three gigging projects - one cover band, one original instrumental band and one original rock band. I understand that by your definition I am not really a member of any band since I'm not exclusive to one band. I guess I'll have to figure a way to live with that. :)

I think playing in multiple bands as a hired gun, free lancer or sub would work fine.

I think playing in multiple bands that are not working or booked consistently would work too.

I am still not sure about someone playing in multiple bands that are booked most Friday & Saturday night.

I can't help but be fascinated that someone would be responsible for 22 out of 69 replies on a thread without offering one single thing that was actually in meaningful of useful response to the initial very specific request to hear from people with experiences in navigating the issues behind playing in multiple bands :rolleyes:

I play with a group, and we had a guitarist trying to do two bands. He didn't have a backup, so it took only a month, and he double booked himself, leaving us high and dry. Another issue was the demands on his own time as far as time to learn and rehearse. We had twice as much time to learn new material.

If you aren't able to give 100% to both, you might find yourself playing for only one of your bands like he did. Nobody wants to learn that they are second place, and they'll quickly find someone willing to put them first.

I find it quite simple. The advent, use and increasing adoption of smart phones, online collaborative calendaring and email make scheduling a relatively simple matter.

Right now I know in 2 groups when I will be playing from May-Nov. 2013, I also play with another couple of groups on a pickup basis, they have access to my calendar and can make arrangements as required.

A little technology, communication and planning makes it all quite painless and efficient.

I agree.

It's not easy and there's a lot variables and different circumstances involved.

I doubt that there's a " one size fits all " model for playing in multiple bands.

I don't think anyone here would argue that there have been bands that had to turn down a gig and the $$ because a members other band took priority.

I never do....hence your definition of a "full band member" means nothing to me. I post about my playing in multiple bands in threads like this because I have years of experience doing it.....I'm still not sure why you post in them but be assured your opinions aren't coloring mine.

Hi Strohman,

Cool, because I know for a fact that my opinions never color or have any sort of impact on anyone.

I post because it's an interesting topic.

I have friends that play in multiple bands and have played in bands where members were in more than one band.

Enjoy the Super Bowl.

If you are in a band where the other members are all in other bands be prepared for your band to be put at the bottom of their prioroty list because let's face it, they dont really care about music, they care about $$. Even if they have day jobs too.
