Playing in two bands... Who does it?

I currently play in a cover band which meets about 4 times a month on a very irregular basis.

There is a tribute band that I'm also interested in, they want to practice twice a month, apparently lots of homework to do, but the guitarist (male) and the singer (female) are a couple, so they practice quite a bit.

The thing is they seem to have already scheduled a show and I just want to gig.

My current band, I like these guys and I love the music, but they are not learning songs as fast as I'd like and they are not thinking about gigging for about 6 months (!)

Personally, I'm ready like Spongebob.

Most of the bass lines I play for band #1 are not that complicated for the most part. I feel that I can handle both, with a bit of family support ;)

Who has done it and what is your advice?

I play guitar in a band called The New Day Breakers and I play bass in a band called Songs for Snakes.

Both bands do original material so sometimes that makes booking gigs easier because I can book both bands for the same show.

For a while I just played either guitar or bass in just one band at a time, but I love both instruments and their unique places in a band setting (as well as the different approaches to playing) and just decided that I need to be actively doing both at the same time.

It can be a struggle time wise, but I make it work. Every so often I'll take a week off and focus on other things.

You only get one life...make as much music as you can with it in the time you have. :)
