Double Bass Playing long notes followed by short….

I have a piece of music, 6 bars long. A dotted minim followed by a crotchet, same pitch. Same rhythm every bar. How do I play this? I run out of bow long before finishing. I don’t understand how to divide the bow for this as I am drawing the down bow 3 times as long as the upbow.

I had to look these terms up - "minim" is a half note, "crotchet" a quarter note.

You need to make the crotchet a little short and use the "time saved" for a retake (lifting the bow from the string and setting it at the frog).

Depends on the articulation.

One possible solution:

Plated the dotted mimim and crotchet in the same bow. Just put a little break between them.

Reverse the bow on the crotchet.

This is the ideal solution if you want to keep the minim full value. It probably is just the overall best choice, unless you want to emphasize the separation between the two notes.

Look up the term "hooked bowing," which is what is being described to you. Other terms include "portato" or "broken slurs", or "slur staccato". Quite a versatile and useful technique.
